Blaze and Aspen sat amongst the trees in a small glade, both stretched out on a rock under the sun, Blaze gently knotting small pink flowers into Aspen’s earth brown hair as he slept, careful not to rock against his antlers.
They had always loved going there, just the two of them. Sitting to watch as the clouds drifted across the sky, listened as the water flowed past rocks and past trees, the birds taking turns singing their songs to each other, the wind innocently dancing to the sound of it.
Blaze looked down at Aspen’s face to see his eyes now open, his hair transformed into a flower bed.
Blaze had always loved studying Aspen’s face as he slept, his tanned features innocent and settled. When he was awake, his face completely transformed into something that sent his heart flying. Watching as the small freckles that lined his cheeks and his eyes danced as he smiled, his eyes lit with beauty and subtle happiness.
He smiled down at his friend and shifted so he sat between his friend’s antlers, knotting one more flower into his hair.
“How does it look?” Aspen asked, closing his eyes again with the calming feeling fo the gentle tug on his hair.
“It looks perfect.” Aspen listened to Blaze’s voice, hanging on to the sound of the satisfaction in it.
Blaze smiled and continued to tug on his hair, liking the feeling of it between his fingers.
“Your antlers are growing in nicely.” Aspen said with his eyes still closed, but he smiled. Blaze moved his other hand so it ran along Aspen’s jaw, feeling the stubble that grew there.
“Thank you, I think so as well.”
Aspen opened his eyes and pushed himself up to sit beside Blaze, feeling the heat as it ran all across his skin. He looked at Blaze, seeing his pale skin and his startling blue eyes, settling on the antlers that had begun to grow on his friend’s head. He reached up and moved his hand over them, feeling the soft fuzz that grew on it. Smiling, he reached out with his other hand, flicking his white ear.
They smiled at each other for a few silent moments, taking in each other’s bodies and faces. Their love for each other filling the air around them and wrapping them together.
Blaze suddenly leaned forward and wrapped his arms around Aspen’s chest, burying his face in his neck and gently dropping kisses on the skin there.
Aspen reached around Blaze and pulled him tighter to his body, reaching up to knot his fingers in the snowy white hair.
Time passed as they held each other, gently kissing each other. Not feeling as the clouds moved across the sky, as the sun began to fall as the world began to ready for another night.
Blaze pushed himself off of Aspen as he realized the world was beginning to grow dark, brushing the dirt of his furry legs as he stood. “I’m going to got to the Borders.”
Aspen sighed, closing his eyes. “I still cannot figure out why you insist on wasting your time.”
“It isn’t a waste of time.” Blaze said for what felt like the millionth time. “They are interesting to watch. I would invite you to come and watch with me but I already know what your answer will be.”
“All they do is hop around their town like small rabbits, buzzing like insects. I don’t understand the appeal.”
“They’re smarter than you give them credit for, Aspen.”
“I bet they are, considering they took majority of the forest to make way for their own kingdoms.” Aspen breathed and stretched out on the rock beneath him again. “That’s not interesting it’s selfish. But go on! Don’t let me stop you!”
“Aspen----”
“No! go! If I haven’t made the slightest impression by now, I probably won’t with this conversation. We’ve discussed this so much and so often it is beginning to bore me.” He slowly squinted up to Blaze, seeing him standing there, Aspen mentally began to cheer, thinking he had finally broken through the childish fascination.
Blaze shook his head and wandered from the glade, taking the long way to get to his spot at the Borders that night.
