[Interview // 2016.08.05]
【Special Interview】 「BURN-UP」Festival ~「CROSS GENE」 Edition: “Putting (your) entire energy in order not to lose (to others)” as the magnificent head-liner
With the sponsorship of “Kimidake LIVE”, which is a Web service where artists and their fans can talk to each other one-to-one, the first men’s dance and vocal festival “BURN-UP” was held on August 4th (Thu) at Toyosu PIT, Tokyo and dragged music-lovers into a swirl of enthusiasm.
Hereafter handsome groups, who will enliven the boys’ dance and vocal scene more and more, will be introduced one after another. A total of 8 groups had showed glamorous performances, but, the one who graced the festival and the last performer was CROSS GENE. They sang 6 songs in total, including their new songs “YING YANG” and “Tegami”, enthusiastically. We asked them how it felt enlivening the venue by rushing with full throttle and guiding “BURN-UP” to the grand finale.
As expected, it was different from usual interviews since we made it just after the live finished, while the members still were soaked in sweat and in a state of peace of mind with the feelings of accomplishment. We talked with them about their feelings on being the head-liner for the first time, this summer’s Japan activities, and memories.
― You graced a festival as the last performer of the day for the first time. How was today’s stage?
Takuya: We were stimulated (and pushed forward) by people’s passion (who were in the event area) and the powerful performance of other artists. It was an enjoyable stage and was an honor to be able to show our performance on the stage as the last performer.
Shin: In addition to that, it has been a really exciting day for us; since, of course our fans were also happy, but the fans of fellow artists there applauded our songs and showed their smiles to us. Since we want to have these kinds of stages with our fellow artists from now on as well, please lend your strength to us!
―Shin, during the MC you said that you talked with other artists when you were waiting for your performance time, right?
Shin:Some of them kindly visited us in the dressing room and we could talk with some others in the corridors. Even though it was just that much, we were really happy to be able to interact with each other by exchanging albums and goods.
― It seems that you had waited for about 4 hours until you got to perform. What did you do backstage?
Yongseok: We watched the monitor.
Shin: We just watched the monitor all along; it was a really enjoyable 4 hours.
Yongseok: We thought that everyone was cool. (haha)
Shin: Normally if we performed 6 songs in a live, we would think about adjusting our pace (distributing our energy well). But, we had watched about 3 hours and saw how other artists performed with all their power, we thought “we can’t lose (to them)!”. When we stood on the stage, we really couldn’t adjust our pace. After we finished singing the last song “sHi-tai!”, we thought we truly would die soon (haha).
Sangmin: We performed with all our might.
Shin: It was so hard, yet very enjoyable!
― Shin, you collapsed just after “sHi-tai!” finished, right.
Shin: That was real (haha). Since I used up all my energy, I had a sense of fulfillment.
― How did it feel performing among other artists’ fans as well?
Yongseok: We were truly happy and it was an honor for us. We hope to perform at different festivals from now on too.
Sangmin: We were happy that we could show our performance also to the people who don’t know CROSS GENE. We want to stand on a stage like this again.
― Although you said “It is okay even if you sit down” to the audience during “Tegami”, the number of people who were cheering for you while standing was high, right.
Shin: We saw on the monitor that everybody has been watching while standing up until that time, so we wanted them to listen to it while to sitting down and resting even if it was just one song. Although we said “It is okay even if you sit down”, everybody just concentrated on our song and we could see it when we looked at each and every one of them; even if we wanted them to rest, we were happy to see them like that.
― Does CROSS GENE’s summer activities end with this one?
Takuya: Yes, it does. This is the last one of the activities that have been decided so far.
― What do you think about this summer’s activities when you look back on them?
Takuya: Every year we usually do promotions in Japan during the summer. This year, we could release our 1st album and 1st photobook, (we) had a feeling of wondering if we could show a new and different face of us to people, and since, conversely, we get a lot of energy from people during summer every year, we could collect good memories this summer as well.
― What is the thing that left an impression on you during this summer’s activities?
Seyoung: Without doubt, it was the fan meeting “Parallel World”. Since it felt like our hearts became one with the ones of everybody, it remains on my mind and heart.
Sangmin: Even though there were many warm memories, the fan meeting is the one which stays on my memory the most.
Yongseok: We had fan meetings in Korea and Singapore as well. The last one was in Japan, and we made a lot of unforgettable memories. We were touched.
Casper: This year’s summer is hot, but, I have been happy since we could work on various things with warm feelings. I would be happy if these kind of opportunities keep increasing from now on, too.
― Lastly, we would like to have Leader Shin's message for the fans.
Shin: Our hearts are full (with emotions) since this summer, as the members already said, a lot of enjoyable things, as well as a lot of "firsts" such as the release of the first Japan album and first photobook, and being the head liner for the first time. To be able to have more opportunities like this, we will keep working on our individual projects as well, as it was announced during the live: Takuya will be on the musical “Black Butler~ NOAH'S ARK CIRCUS”; Casper’s movie will be released in Taiwan; and Yongseok is still performing on “Altar Boyz”. While doing our best for our individual projects, we would like to combine each members’ matured personal strength into one for (our) next activities as CROSS GENE, and want to show an even more passionate side of us compared to the one this summer. Thus, we expect to have people’s support from now on, too!
This summer, CROSS GENE challenged/tried out all kinds of various things. This day as well, before their turn, the members were relaxed and greeted us by smiling; however, after carrying out the important task of being the head-liner for the first time, they had an expression of accomplishment on their faces. That expression was like telling how much their growth was this summer.
