Welcome to your Mystery Hike! This 4 mile (round trip) excursion will have you hiking through the scenic metropolis that is Kansas City. Wear comfortable shoes, pack light and carry cash. Also, don’t forget your handy state licensed ID for tasty beverages.
We created a Facebook Event for this Mystery Hike, which can be found here: http://bit.ly/2ssL8Bw
After creating our guest list, we allowed them to invite others, the more the merrier! In order to participate, guests needed to send a direct message to the creator, in order to be provided information of where to start on the day of the hike.
You will begin your journey at 500 Walnut St, where you will find Opera House Coffee. Here you, and the rest of the hikers, will meet up and purchase some aromatic, black brewed beverage and a warmed, gooey baked good.
Today’s Mystery Hike guide will be none other than the future Kansas City socialite, Madeline Landry. Madeline Landry, of the Landry estate, had ambition to attend college but social class responsibilities and political unrest caused her life to wonder down a different path. A path that we will forge with her today. Madeline makes the perfect guide by not only knowing the rich past of Kansas City and its urban landmarks, but she can also give us insight into the futuristic, dystopian backdrop it will make for a dismal, war torn future.
Here are all the clues for today’s Mystery Hike!
Once the whole hike party has gathered and been sufficiently filled with caffeine and baked goods, you will head to our first streetcar stop- City Market. Upon arrival at said stop, open clue #deuces.
Hop on the streetcar and take it just around the corner to River Market North.
Beat the Streetcar Challenge- Bonus points if one of your party members can run and beat the streetcar to the next stop. Runner cannot begin until entire party has boarded the streetcar. (Picture evidence required- also this bonus task can be repeated during each leg of your street car rides.)
When entire party has arrived at the stop- proceed to the Arabia Steamboat Museum (400 Grand Blvd) and head to the gift shop. There you must acquire the most unique postcard imaginable. Once acquired, head back to the River Market North street car stop and open clue #thalatha
Leap on to the streetcar and enjoy the ride to the River Market West stop. (Don’t forget- bonus points for the “Beat the Streetcar Challenge”)
Once everyone has arrived, head to River Market Antiques, 15 W 5th St. Here you are tasked with locating an antique feline for your library office. Upon obtaining said beast, go back to the streetcar stop and tear open clue #ourfa
Skip onto the streetcar (remember- Beat the Streetcar is an option- for bonus points) and settle in for a leisurely roll over the well-traveled I-35 superhighway.
At the North Loop stop, please exit the streetcar and find a tree, any tree will do, and give it a big ol’ bear hug. Once accomplished, wait 10 minutes or so for the next streetcar to stop and open clue #cinco
Cartwheel back onto the streetcar (Beat the Streetcar is still real… just sayin’… do it it’s not that far) and head to the Library stop.
Remove yourselves from the streetcar and make your way to the Kansas City Public Library- Central Branch at 14 W 10th St. Here you will need to take a picture from the rooftop terrace, Teen Room, and parking garage. Feel free to fill your pack with all the ebooks you can hold. Meander back to the streetcar stop and flip open clue #sechs
Piggyback your bestie onto the streetcar (Seriously, Beat the Streetcar will ALWAYS be fun) and hitch your way to the Metro Center.
This is where you will jump on a bus, make friends with a bus driver and beg them for a selfie. If they say no, an awkward selfie with a disgruntled driver in the background will suffice. If that is impossible, a selfie with a bus will secure lower than average points. Then head back to the stop and open clue #sept
Robot walk aboard the streetcar (#BTS- still goin’ on. Extra bonus points if you start this hashtag on Twitter) and settle in for a two block “Sprint” (#witty) to Power & Light.
Push your party out the door and make your way to No Other Pub by Sporting KC, 1370 Grand Blvd. Here’s where you can take in a game, get an appetizer and/or drink and reflect over your journey thus far. The highs, the lows and the #BTS woes. Compare tree hugging splinters and #BTS blisters, while drinking the pain away. After, make your way back to the streetcar and unveil clue #oito
Stumble upon the streetcar (#BTS- imperative at this point) and grab a quick snooze before stopping at the Kauffman Center at 1601 Broadway.
Take a group picture (pyramid style) in front of the Kauffman Center. Bonus if the antique feline is atop the configuration. Roll your way back to the streetcar stop and reveal clue #九.
Frog jump over one another onto the streetcar (#BTS- gotta get those steps) and mentally prepare yourselves for the next challenge at the Crossroads. (Bonus if you sing Bone Thugs-n-Harmony upon de-boarding)
Make your way to Up-Down, 101 Southwest Blvd, purchase 6 pack and a pound (6 drinks and a pound of tokens), avoid the roofies from the bartender and use those tokens to play some games.
Afterward, stagger over to Lulu’s Noodles (YUM!!) at 2030 Central and consume noodles. Slurping is most acceptable. Bonus points are awarded for going on Sunday for All Day Happy Hour.
Grab your gut and go back to the streetcar stop and peel open clue #10, f-ing 10
Frolic onto the streetcar (#BTS- last reasonable chance) and get a quick shuteye before landing at Union Station, a historical Kansas City landmark (not that the other ones weren’t, but here the mob massacred several unsavory individuals- so it’s famous and shit).
Head towards the KC Rail Experience and take a picture with a train, the bigger the better. Bonus points for a picture inside the train.
From there, go to the KC Store and find the “coolest” KC memorabilia.
Then take the skywalk over to Crown Center to take in the Thomas and Friends exhibit. Here you’ll need to be a ticket taker and bonus points for boarding Thomas, himself.
Crawl your way back to the streetcar stop and embark on the last leg of your journey, back to the beginning of where it all started, the good ol’ City Market stop.
(#BTS- if someone in your party attempts and completes this portion of the challenge- they WIN- ALL THE POINTS- it’s a long f-ing way- everyone else must purchase drinks for this overachieving, miraculous a-hole)
The Black Dog Sirius black likes his coffee like he likes his last name- dark and dangerous. This coffee comes with a punch: 4 shots of espresso, creamy ever changing foam, and a sprinkle of dark rum sugar. This drink is for "Sirius" coffee lovers only.
