To put it simply, after several years of being relegated to second citizenry by sky-high fuel prices and economic malaise, SUVs have become cool again.
These aren’t the big, burly soccer-mom ships to which we’ve become accustomed. These are sleek, smooth-riding, stylish rides. All the while, they provide the space needed from the traditional SUV. The best thing…the gas mileage has become affordable.
Let’s take a look at the hottest SUVs for 2017.
The jack-of-all-trades Acadia is ready to tackle the trails—and carpool lanes—with plenty of storage and room for up to seven. Touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 4G LTE connectivity, and mobile Wi-Fi is available. A 194-hp 2.5-liter four or a 310-hp 3.3-liter V-6 drive the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission; all-wheel drive is optional. Extras like automatic emergency braking and a novel “rear-seat reminder” boost the Acadia’s safety street cred.
For the first time, the Escalade is equipped with automatic park assist. The Escalade is powered by a 6.2-inch cast-aluminum V8 engine. It makes 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, sent through an 8-speed automatic transmission to either rear-wheel drive (RWD) or available full-time 4-wheel drive (4WD). Fuel economy for the 2017 Cadillac Escalade is 15 mpg city/22 highway/17 combined with RWD and 15/20/17 with 4WD. Smoothing out the Escalade’s ride is GM’s Magnetic Ride Control. A shock absorber fluid is loaded up with metal shavings and a current is run through the fluid, allowing the system to change the stiffness of the shocks for different driving conditions and respond to changes in the road in record time
The Bentayga is the first official mass-produced SUV from Bentley. We say “official” and “mass-produced” because the British automaker once produced a very limited-run SUV called the Dominator. It was heavily based on the Land Rover Range Rover, and was commissioned for the Sultan of Brunei. Although you’ll probably never even get a glimpse of the ultra-rare Dominator, don’t fret, as anyone who steps behind the wheel of a Bentayga will be driving the “fastest, most powerful,” SUV in the world. Bentley has taken the first move in what is said to be a coming surge of ultra-luxury SUVs, including offerings from Jaguar, Maserati, and even Lamborghini.
This is an easy one. What other sport-ute looks like the new F-Pace? The luxury midsize crossover/SUV segment is an oversaturated place where almost nothing stands out. There are exceptions. The Range Rover Sport is always recognizable as a big, precious box. The new Audi Q7 is exceptionally clean cut. The Volvo XC90 is downright gorgeous. But many other expensive SUVs don’t look that great, the Porsche Cayenne included. The F-Pace? Damn. Jaguar’s whole purpose was to make it look like a cross between an XF sedan and an F-Type coupe, lifted with a hatch. That they’ve done it to no ill effect is just stunning.
Maserati has strongly emphasized that its new Levante is as much a Maserati as any of its luxury-performance brethren. It’s the latest addition to a surprisingly crowded vehicle segment, as more and more high-end luxury and supercar manufacturers give the hyper-luxury SUV a shot. Although a price has not been officially announced by Maserati, buyers should expect the SUV to start around $70,000, which would certainly push it into the upper realm of crossover prices. With the Levante, Maserati is promising GT on-road dynamics and a fully capable and comfortable off-road experience in an opulent SUV.
Calling to mind Nissan’s most popular models, like the Altima, Rogue, Sentra, Pathfinder, and Versa, the fact that the Japanese automaker offers larger consumer vehicles does not always seem all that obvious. And yet those vehicles are there. The Nissan Titan full-size pickup truck is one of only two non-American models to compete with the likes of the Ford F-150 or Chevy Silverado (the other being the Toyota Tundra), and you’ll find the Armada, the largest and most powerful vehicle Nissan makes, sitting squarely at the top of the automaker’s SUV lineup. Now entering its second generation, the fully redesigned 2017 Armada concludes Nissan’s recent overhaul of its SUV/crossover model range, which also includes the Pathfinder, Murano, and Rogue.
The QX30’s striking hatchback shape is capped by a flowing front end with menacing headlights and a gaping front grille. The looks are distinctly Infiniti, but the DNA is actually shared in part with a German automaker. The QX30’s platform is sourced from a chassis developed for the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, a compact hatchback sold in Europe. As such, the QX30 maintains all of its Infiniti-family styling, but with the underpinnings of a composed European compact capable of carving up both back roads and city streets.
