Top 10 TV Shows of 2017 - #2 - GLOW (Netflix)
This show is so much fun and heartfelt. I loved the flawed yet likable characters who each have their own clear and distinct personalities. The dialogue is sharp, and carries substance. The acting and comedic timing is spot on. Every episode was thoroughly enjoyable and I was rooting for them all. I absolutely loved GLOW.
Top 10 TV Shows of 2017 - #10 - Castlevania (Netflix)
This was an interesting nice animation with a simple story. The fighting sequences are fluid and exciting. The voice cast is good bringing weight to the characters. It’s an easy bingeable 4 episode series and I want too see more.
Top 10 TV Shows of 2017 - #3 - Wynonna Earp ( Syfy, Space )
Wynonna Earp has good writing, characters you enjoy being around, a healthy dose of fan service and 'can do no wrong in my book'. This season was entertaining as it was heartbreaking. All the actors do a fantastic job and I love this season even better than the first one. It’s so much fun and the entire cast makes this show even better. I am so happy it got renewed for a third season.I love this show!
Top 10 TV Shows of 2017 - #5 - Gotham (FOX)
This entire year of Gotham has been gold. Gotham is a fantastical city where the dead come back to life, people can survive freezing, and madmen run around wearing a pig’s head. And yet it manages to be believable because it treats its characters with respect. Their pain, struggles and feelings keep the exaggerated moments of the show together. The majority of the cast is really good, and they have enough space to be so by the writers. It has surprisingly funny moments for a show with subject matter so dark. I have been enjoying this show for a while now and if you were on the fence about Gotham, start watching!
Top 10 TV Shows of 2017 - #9 - Brooklyn Nine-Nine (FOX)
The best thing about this show is the characters. They are the reason this show has such a dedicated and passionate fan base. I don’t even understand how this show has gone completely under some people’s radar. It’s a consistently good and entertaining. This season has some poignant moments and story lines. I really love this show! If you’re not watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine you’re honestly missing out.
Top 10 TV Shows of 2017 - #1 - Legion (FX)
Legion is an odd ball show. There are full blown musical numbers with choreographed dance sequences, it's visually interesting, highly inventive and surprising. I love the 70′s esque style to the entire show, it feels like it might belong to the the X-Men First Class universe but even then it’s entirely on its own. The references are subtle and don’t detract from the story. It’s expertly told and at times absolutely tense and off beat.
David’s abilities are comparable to a nuclear weapon and the sequences where he uses his powers are frightening. The subtext delves into the subconscious and id and ego and the idea of who you are is relatable. The characters are well thought out and sympathetic. The villain is the most terrifying villain ever put on TV, and the moments where we see it are distressing. In those moment all I can do is hope that everything goes well for our protagonists. The actors are all great and wonderful. The special effects in the show are great along with the memorable score. Unique sequences and shots are forever burned into my memory.
I’m worried with the Disney/Fox merger what will happen to this wonderful out of the box show that is putting out something different. Noah Hawley, the creator is showcasing art on cable TV. This is my #1 recommendation of the entire year, and there are only 8 episodes of this strange show, you should give it a chance!
Top 10 TV Shows of 2017 - #4 - Marvels’ Runaways (Hulu)
Never having read the comic I’m unsure whether this is a faithful adaptation, but as a TV show it works. You really care about the young cast and even the adults in the show. It’s a good balance of well paced overarching story mixed in with good characters. The dialogue is good and they feel like genuine teenagers who have flaws and make mistakes. It does a good job of inserting the fantastical into the mundane without feeling campy or arch. This is an excellent show!
Top 10 TV Shows of 2017 - #6 - Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency ( BBC America)
Dirk Gently’s season 2 was simply wonderful. It’s quirky, odd and there’s never a dull moment. I really love these characters, and the ensemble cast. This season went in a different direction than the first and had the most joyous episode I've ever seen on television in episode 4 “Shapes and Colors”. I really love this show I’m praying another network picks it up!
