Cubs Go Heavy on Pitchers in 2019 MLB Draft

As the president of Elk Grove Village, Illinois-based MLE Merchandising & Sign Solutions, Mike Loftus has grown the brand services company to achieve annual revenue exceeding $25 million. When he isn't leading MLE, Mike Loftus enjoys following his favorite professional sports teams, including Major League Baseball's Chicago Cubs. The 2019 MLB Amateur Draft took place in June and the Cubs utilized its first 10 picks to improve its pitching depth. Chicago, which according to ESPN has the 29th-ranked minor league system, selected pitchers with seven of its first 10 picks. With its first-round pick, 27th overall, the team selected Fresno State right-handed pitcher Ryan Jensen. In his junior year last season, Jensen posted a win-loss record of 12-1 to go along with a 2.88 earned run average (ERA) and 107 strikeouts versus only 27 walks. Chicago selected UCLA infielder Chase Strumpf with its second-round pick, but used its next three picks on pitchers. Louisville right-handed pitcher Michael McAvene was taken with the team's third-round pick. Pitching out of the bullpen, McAvene recorded seven saves and registered a 2.73 ERA through 33 innings last season. He also had 50 strikeouts. Other pitchers drafted in the first 10 rounds by Chicago include Chris Clarke (USC), Josh Burgmann (Washington), and Davidjohn Herz (Terry Sanford High School).
