The meteor didn’t take everything out at once. Of course, the world couldn’t be that kind.

Instead, the death, the extinction, was slow. Sure, the meteor took out everything in its blast radius instantaneously, but the world is large and Suffering had a debt to collect.

The arboreal animals fell first, following the plant life in the volcanic winter. As the food chain dissolved, larger and larger animals started to struggle. Some survived, as always – this was nothing compared to the Permian – but the balance was upended and niches drained like colanders.

Those that lived had to lie low, scuttling into dens at the whisper of Death’s wings overhead. The meteor didn’t take everything at once, but it took so much.

All that was left was broken ice under a shattered sky.
