My year in review

(Only a few weeks late!)

This year was a completely fresh start for me: I put everything I own in storage and went to costume school!

I realised that in my many varied jobs over the years, a consistent source of happiness for me was making costumes for myself and others, and I wanted to get proper training in it so I could do it professionally. Attending Northern College of Costume was a life-changing experience that taught me invaluable skills, opened up new possibilities, and allowed me to meet really passionate and talented people. I'll always be grateful for what I learned there and for the patience and encouragement that was extended to me.

After years of making costumes and learning on my own, it was incredibly energizing to be in a studio with other people who were busy creating too; this excitement continued as I went onwards to theatre workrooms and got immersed in the chaos of bringing stories to life onstage. I absolutely love being a dresser, in addition to being a maker, and it's been amazing to take on both of those roles on various shows this year.

Also, after years of NDA restrictions I was also able to share my involvement as a consultant in my favourite game franchise ever - Dragon Age - and attend the press event for the launch of Dragon Age: The Veilguard in San Francisco. I never in my wildest dreams would have thought I'd see my name in the credits of a massive game and I'm so proud to have been involved in my small way.

I've been making an effort to keep a sketch diary to record my backstage and travel experiences, to remember everything by in addition to just photos. Burnout for painting had been creeping up on me for a long time and hit HARD this year, which as an illustrator I was embarrassed about, but doodling my life has been keeping me feeling connected to art while I let my passion for it hibernate.

It's been stressful being on-the-go studying and working without a permanent home base, but I'm lucky to be in a position where I can pursue something I'm interested in. I can only hope to grow as much next year as I did this one.

My 2024 in Star Wars Art

The sequence of getting an iPad for digital art, bad batch s3, watching rebels and all of tcw for the first time, and me getting back on tumblr is to thank for all of this. I never would’ve guessed the animated Star Wars fandom here was so active and full of great people!! I was immediately overwhelmed as soon as I started posting my Star Wars art (in the best way possible).

I even now have an IRL reputation for being the Star Wars person. Even at work. It spews out of my brain and gets everywhere.

Anyway, I was in a little bit of an art slump before this year. I’m just so happy to be back in it and creating just for the sake of it.

Anyway, if you want to see more here’s my masterpost. I can’t believe pretty much all of that was created in the last 9 months. If you have creative energy to make ANYTHING, USE IT OR LOSE IT! Every time I make Star Wars fanart it just increases the chances that I’ll do it again, especially when I get such wonderful feedback from this community 🥰✨✨
