The US Government published specification for a lightweight general purpose vehicle that could be used in all theatres of operation and asked companies to tender their designs. Similar vehicles were designed by American Bantam, Ford and Willys which were each tested with the most successful being the American Bantam design. The first vehicles were built but it became evident that American Bantam did not have the finances or manufacturing capacity to fulfil the large numbers required and the contract was awarded to Willys to build vehicles to the American Bantam design and for Ford to tool up for a subsequent order. The two vehicles were made to the same specification with interchangeable parts. The bulk of the military production undertaken by Willys. Following the British and US forces regaining the liberation of France and to help in logistic and the post war ailing French economy Hotchkiss of France also began production of their version of the Jeep, also with interchangeable parts, this production continued into the 1960's and the Jeep served in North Africa and Indo-China.
