CLAREMONT – During each practice, first-year Campbell football coach Greg Gush makes sure to set aside at least some time for his “tip drill.” In Friday’s Division III opener against Stevens, that attention to detail proved fruitful. Gush’s Cougars reeled in two lengthy touchdown passes on balls tipped by Stevens defenders, and pulled off a timely defensive stand on the potential go-ahead two-point conversion try late in the fourth quarter to clinch a 21-20 victory. Campbell quarterback Christian McKenna led the way with three touchdown passes, helping lift his team to a 1-0 start in the South conference. The Cardinals are now 1-1 in the West. “Sometimes you’ve got to get lucky,” said Gush, whose team will host Bishop Brady (1-0) on Sept. 21.
