En Reno (Nevada), Helen Brent (Claire Trevor), una mujer fría y calculadora, acaba de divorciarse. Esa misma noche, en la casa donde se aloja, descubre un doble asesinato. Como iba a regresar a San Francisco, prefiere irse sin avisar a la policía para no involucrarse. En el tren se encuentra con Sam Wild (Lawrence Tierney), un atractivo psicópata.
