George with Peter Tork of the Monkees, photographed on c. 5th July 1967, at Kinfauns when George invited him during the Monkees 1967 European tour. The previous night NEMS had hosted a party for the Monkees at the Speakeasy Club, London, with George, John and Paul in attendance as well as Eric Clapton, Keith Moon and Jeff Beck among others. George also later invited Peter to play banjo on the Wonderwall soundtrack. Peter’s part didn’t make it onto the soundtrack, but can be heard on the film.
“I remember Peter [Tork] from The Monkees played banjo on that session. Peter was so nervous that his hands were shaking.”
[Colin Manley, The Remo Four, talking about the Wonderwall recording session, which took place on 22nd January 1968]
These photographs are from Peter’s visit to Kinfauns, taken from Flip Magazine, My Daily Diary of The Monkees Tour by Ric Klein (Monkees’ stage manager), published in November 1967. The person with George and Peter in the top photo is Bill Chadwick, Monkees roadie. The photo of Peter and George with Mal in the background is from the Wonderwall session.
So sad to hear Peter Tork passed away yesterday. The Monkees have a special place in my heart for many reasons. I saw them in Liverpool a few years ago. Peter always seemed like such a sweetheart. xx
