Bill and Beth. Beth and Bill. They'd been together forever, for so long that people took their union for granted, assumed the kinds of familiar-as-an-old-shoe nonsense people assumed about long-term couples who weren't known to have a rocky relationship. For the most part, the nonsense wasn't true about them, but it did create good cover. He'd never imagined himself as a father at all, had thought he would steer clear of parenting after everything he'd experienced in his childhood home. But Sinead had been adamant when they'd gotten serious: "Don't move forward with me if you absolutely won't have kids because I absolutely want them." And he'd known that he absolutely wanted Sinead, so they'd talked and talked and talked, and he'd started therapy, and then -- he always wants to say "suddenly," but there was nothing sudden about it -- there was Tricia, and his brain fell into a different groove. Jax loved a high view. She thought of it like a hunter's blind, but that sounded creepy if she said it aloud. She didn't have hunting fantasies, just liked a "high hide," as they'd called it in Jurassic Park, the ability to observe without being seen. She knew there was something troubling about that, some way the it reflected how she put herself out into the world ... or didn't. But she let it go, loathe to analyze every last thing. What she knew was that she couldn't deny her love of the high hide.
