Álvaro Cunhal (1913-2005) was one of the most important political figures in Portugal known for opposing its dictatorship of 41 years. Like many others he was arrested and tortured by the state police (PIDE) for being against the fascist government of Salazar. He was in prison for 15 years, 8 of which in total isolation, and took refuge in other countries until April 25th 1974 when the country's military forces took over radio stations and other media and made the revolution that allowed Portugal to be a free country again. He became part of the provisional governments whose goal was to create a democratic voting system, a new constitution, and allow citizens to create political parties. He was later elected by public vote as congressman and remained part of the government until 1992. He would die in 2005 of old age.

21st April, 2018: València, Valencian Country/País valencià:

Thousands take the streets in the annual demonstration celebrated the weekend before April 25th (the Valencian Country’s national day). Valencians demand linguistic and cultural rights, which are threatened by the Spanish government’s repression. The protesters also demanded freedom for the Catalan political prisoners held in Spanish jails and the return of the exiled in Catalonia, and protested againt the brutal Spanish supremacist neonazi groups who attacked the Valencian protesters on the demonstration of last October 9th, under the vigilance of the police, who did nothing to stop the neonazi violence.

This year, the protest was special. This year marked 25 years since a group of Spanish supremacists murdered Guillem Agulló, a 18 year old independentist and antifascist. Even thought it wasn’t the first time that neonazis had killed a Valencian person for wanting the independence of the Catalan countries, Guillem’s death became a symbol of the fight against fascism and occupation (More about Guillem’s injustice in this post). Since today, a street in València will be named after him: Passeig Guillem Agulló.
