Graceful Degradation

Graceful degradation is design where a breakdown in function does not spell death. It is redundancies and contingencies and the ability to carry on Even if effectiveness has been reduced to half or less. It is understanding that a slow limp is better than not moving at all. It is planned obsolescence's antithesis.

Graceful degradation is the understanding that youth fades And that we must prepare for the days with dentures and bum knees and hip replacements. We must be comfortable with wrinkles and sagging skin and crackling joints.

Graceful degradation is the letting go of the immortality of youth And recognising that for the delusion it is. It is embracing the inevitability of age, And accepting death and all its omens. Your hands are gentler when they are free.
