My friends were wondering the other day...was fuck used in old english? Did it have a different meaning than it does today? and is it really a bad word?
I mean how did one of our most popular and most vulgar swear words come into existence and our language?
There has been many different myths that fuck is acronym for "fornication under consent of the king" or "for unlawful carnage knowledge". However, after doing some research, I don't think this is true. Although many scholars don't exactly know where the word fuck derived from, they can take educated guesses that the word is probably Germanic. The earliest citing of the word was in 1503 in the The Oxford English Dictionary.
Scholars also believe that the word was used as casually back then as it is today. But why is it so bad? Just because in our society it means to have sex? so does love making and that isn't frowned upon. same with fornication. and intercourse. I may be approaching this topic with ignorance and actually can honestly say that I have no idea if the bible discusses curse words or not because I've never read it and didn't grow up in a religious family but even if the bible says these are bad words...I want to know why. If I made up the entire english language alone, I could make "apple" and "pear" be dirty words and whenever we said "apple" everyone would snicker and gasp at the horror. Get real.
