Writing Initiative #4

For this weeks critique, I presented my 3 prototypes for the censorship rubiks cubes, and overall, my classmates were liked the concept! They liked the way it physically represented censorship through fragmentation (and visually looked a bit like a compound eye). However, they did also point out areas that could be refined!

Strengths:

My classmates confirmed that creating a series of cubes with different difficulty levels, would make the piece more dynamic. Instead of just one cube, a progression could reinforce the idea that some censored messages are easier to reconstruct than others.

The way the message is scrambled was seen as both a strength and a potential weakness. Some found it confusing to decipher the text when solved, but instead of fixing it, they suggested I lean into that difficulty as an intentional part of the concept.

There was interest in including a booklet, box, or sheet that provides context for the quotes used—where they come from, their historical relevance—but without instructions on how to solve the cube.

Weaknesses:

Material & Readability Adjustments:

Instead of using black sticker paper, they suggested white paper to avoid the rough exposed edges that made the cubes look unfinished.

Making the lettering smaller would increase the disconnectedness of the scrambled cube.

2. Alternative Variations to Explore:

Using full words on each square (though it might be too crowded).

Using full quote on each side (all from 1 source).

Using single letters on each side (cube spells 1 word).

Using images on each side.

Using different shades of grey for each side (similar to traditional rubiks cube).

How This Feedback Will Inform Next Steps:

Moving forward, I’ll focus on refining both execution and clarity:

Test different materials (white vs. black paper AND vinyl stickers).

Adjust the text layout to explore the suggested variations.

Develop an accompanying component (like a booklet or box).
