Robert did mean that I love you, but I don't think he realised that until he actually said it.
Oh, my sentiments exactly, anon! I don’t think he realized what he was saying until the words were out of his mouth, and then he knew he meant it.
It was a completely spontaneous declaration that happened before he could stop himself or force himself to convince his own mind that it wasn’t true, he didn’t have time to think his way out of it because it just kind of…..got blurted out because he needed Aaron to hear it. Even if he couldn’t do anything about it or act on it yet, he still needed him to hear it, so he could at least try and understand part of how Robert felt about him.
If we go back a short while to Robert and Chas finding Aaron alone and injured in the woods, he almost says it there as well, but he stops himself at the last second because Chas is there and it was still too difficult for him to process. It was a conscious decision to hold back on saying “I love him”.
This time, though? It’s not his head he’s leading with, it’s his heart, and the truth of what’s in it, even if he can’t deal with what that means at that point in time.
It also becomes the theme of their relationship, in a way, doesn’t it? Because everything Robert does is because he loves Aaron and doesn’t want him to feel any pain, even when he’s the source of that pain. He does everything he can to take his suffering away, because nestled deep within his own struggles and difficulties to accept himself and embrace who he is, underneath his shame and guilt and fear, is knowing that Aaron is it for him.
He’s The One, his soulmate, the one he’s supposed to be with, and that’s the driving force behind everything for him.
