Barbara Manning (Long Beach, California) has been an important part of my musical universe for years. Whether 28th Day, SF Seals or her solo work, she has an unbelievable knack for writing perfect pop. I'm guessing that's why she traveled to New Zealand to write and record an album with some of her Flying Nun peers. And she absolutely nails several covers of songs by The Bats.
She is going to do a mini tour with Codeine this month. And the heads at Ba Da Bing! Records asked Manning if she wanted to put something out to coincide with the tour. "Charm of Yesterday" is the result. This is a collection of covers and originals composed and recorded by Manning in Chico and Long Beach.
Manning is a huge baseball fan, and she released an album named "One Perfect Green Blanket" as an homage to the green baseball field. Listening to her music is like having one perfect warm blanket draped over me.
28th Day - Pages Turn (1985)
28th Day were a neo-psych/jangle pop group from Chico, CA, led by Barbara Manning and Cole Marquis. This is a different version of the song that appeared on their mini-LP - it’s much more aggressive and driving - it’s all the better for it.
1986 The first Screaming Trees show.
Tonight the nobles try to conceal their indiscretions behind masks and costumes.

I learned about this from a fellow Bandcamper. If you're looking for an easy way to learn about new music, simply follow some Bandcampers who you respect or have similar tastes. The click the lightning bolt at the top right of the Bandcamp page and scroll away.
Grasses are a Ypsilanti, Michigan band. It doesn't seem like they're active anymore as their Facebook page and Bandcamp page are from 2018. This is delightful indie rock in the vein of 28th Day, Yo La Tengo, Barbara Manning and R.E.M.
This cassette looks to be self-released.

A couple of years ago Numero Group released a compilation of lesser known/unknown bands called "You're Not From Around Here". One of the bands on that compilation was Bailey's Nervous Kats (they were also on the soundtrack to the Netflix show "Wild Wild Country".
Now, Numero Group is giving Bailey's Nervous Kats a full release/reissue. "The Nervous Kats" was a compilation originally released in 1965. Bailey's Nervous Kats formed in the late 1950s and were part of the nascent surf sound made famous primarily by The Ventures.
But, what really wowed me about Bailey's Nervous Kats is the fact that they plied this sound in Redding, California. Redding is nestled off I-5 in Northern California and is generally not known for any music scene. There was a burst of music there and in nearby Chico, California in the 1980s (bands like 28th Day, The Vertels, Harvester, Buick, Case For Radio, and Sidearm all had ties to mostly Redding, but also Chico).
Any fans of surf music, Elvis Presley, and Charlie Megira take not of Bailey's Nervous Kats.
