Modern Au Mo Ran has always been afraid of the dark since childhood. He remembered after the burning of the illegal prostitute operation's main site, he struggled free before the police could get there. The smoke was inhaled into his lungs, which made him feel dizzy with every step as he attempted to walk away through the dark alleyway.

His fear of the dark was there.

He does not have a choice. That was the only way out.

The main entrance would catch too much attention. He was the only one alive out of this massacre; everyone else died because of him. He didn’t know that the fire would have grown out of control.

He tripped on a rock. He attempts to pull his weak and exhausted form up before collapsing once more; that was when he saw a young man who held out his hand to the fallen teen. His head has two floating red strings, of which one connects to the man in front of him. The warm hand grabs onto his cold one, pulling him up from the ground.

Appearing like an angel from heaven, pulling him up from his darkness.

“Are you okay?”

Before Mo Ran could respond, Chu Wanning was forcibly pulled away by the adult that accompanied him.

“Wanning, he got germs. Don’t go near him!”

He didn’t mind being called dirty; the moment of warmth from the hand lasted a lifetime in his memory even if it was brief.

It took a while, but fortunately, everything worked out in the end. With time and patience, (Y/N) opened up to both Mo Ran and Chu Wanning. The invisible wall between Chu Wanning and (Y/N) crumbled as they got used to each other’s presence. The trio’s relationship has improved, and trust has been gained through mutual understanding and respect. While Mo Ran still has the habit of getting handsy every now and then, it is manageable.

(Y/N)’s perspective of love has already greatly changed. Love is not as black as he thought it was. It’s a matter of finding the perfect partners. While it would be rare for anyone to do that, it is still possible with time and patience.

There were moments where Mo Ran would compare this life with his childhood life, the warmth contrasting with the cold. Mo Ran wondered what would have happened if the other man hadn’t pulled Chu Wanning away. Maybe Mo Ran would have formed connections much earlier on.

Both Chu Wanning and Mo Ran were able to see those red strings of fate even before they met; neither of them knew the meaning behind it at that time other than that they were connected in some type of form.

Before meeting Chu Wanning, Mo Ran was a baby who got left in front of the door of an orphanage. From then on, Mo Ran has been living in an orphanage with the rest of the kids for years. Mo Ran never ended well in the orphanage, always escaping his foster homes and the orphanage to go adventuring.

He wanted to explore the meaning behind the red strings. Did it mean body counts? No. That’s not possible since he has had those two red strings connected to him since childhood. He also noticed something off since most people only have one red string, strangely enough he has two.

The desire to figure it out. Never once was it successful, as the red strings seemed endless as they continued to stretch out for miles. Mo Ran attempted to go further; every single time he was caught and brought back to the orphanage.

One day, Mo Ran got adopted once more with a few other orphan kids by the same woman. She guided them into the prostitution institution, where they were stripped bare and bathed thoroughly before being put into tank tops that exposed their frail little arms and cheap pants. The place was filled with the smell of incense from day till night. The kids roam the illegal business with clients staring at their small forms with lust and desire.

Mo Ran made a couple of young friends there. He was like a big brother to them. However, he has his limits. Once he got into a fight with a male client trying to take advantage of a younger boy, only to be the one badly beaten and locked up in a dark room with no light. Those moments contributed to his fear of the smell of incense and the dark.

One thing he knows is that he must escape. He planned it out.

He set the fire at the busiest time of the place, and the fire spread wildly. He locks out all the entrances other than the back door one leading to the alleyway. At the time that the fire started, Mo Ran rushed to find the others.

The sounds of screaming, clothes ripping, and sizzling were all echoing in his ear.

Everything was in chaos. Mo Ran rushed to the empty kitchen, grabbing a knife until he was caught red-handed by the brothel madam’s son, the son of the woman who brought him here in the first place. The boy was hiding in the kitchen. Mo Ran has never had a good relationship with his son, especially after the incident where Mo Nian attempts to force a kid to serve a client sexually.

That night ended with the deafening screams until the fire reached a peak that Mo Ran couldn't handle, leading to him finally running out. He dropped the blood-stained knife into the fire.

That was also the night he met one of his fated ones. The next person he saw after he awakened from his unconsciousness was an anxious man in a suit. The man asks about what happened to the brothel; Mo Ran only gives him small details. Excluding the part where he killed the madam and his son. The man connected the dots together before Mo Ran’s wakening and was able to find the bloody knife with the fingerprints before the police did.

In order to get the rewards, he took a risk, and from then on, Mo Ran became the nephew of the principal of the infamous Sisheng University. Mo Ran's intended special class sessions within the university teach him the basics from elementary to university level. It took a long while for Mo Ran to absorb all that information, followed by his short attention span; everything still worked out in the end.

Mo Ran figured out that the red strings mean fated lovers, while still bewildered that there were two. To him, it was somewhat of a hassle. He wonders whether that means he should stay loyal to the strings once he finds his fated lovers; therefore, he decided to have some extra years of ‘fun’ while it lasted.

In the fifth year, a new university teacher for the history course visited, attracting multiple students with his looks, until he drove nearly more than two-thirds of the students away with his sharp attitude.

Mo Ran has no desire to get a degree in history until he notices that he and the new professor, Chu Wanning, are connected by a red string. He wonders if Chu Wanning was the same person who saved him or the other fated lover. He decided to apply for the university history course to figure it out. By the end of the day when the classroom was empty, leaving only Chu Wanning and him inside, he went to ask and got the answer.

Chu Wanning was indeed the man who saved him.

“Did you go looking for me?” Mo Ran asks. Chu Wanning could see those red strings of fate as well, nonetheless he said that despite that, he wasn’t the reason why he applied here.

Mo Ran doubts that he wasn’t the reason. He must have been the reason since, out of all the universities Chu Wanning could apply for his job at, it was his university of all places. Mo Ran chose to allow Chu Wanning to keep his dignity verbally, not wanting to burst his bubble too soon.

While Chu Wanning knows that Mo Ran is one of his fated lovers, he treats Mo Ran the exact same as the rest of the students, much to Mo Ran’s dismay. Those ‘after sessions’ are what made them grow closer, and the issue of being treated the same slowly changed as Chu Wanning began to view Mo Ran in a way more than a student.

In the beginning of their forbidden relationship, one of the most outrageous requests that Mo Ran made was for Chu Wanning to use a small vibrator during his lecture and give Mo Ran the control. Only to be turned down due to how improper and dangerous that would be in exposing their relationship. And it remained as that for the following years, with Mo Ran failing Chu Wanning’s class a couple of times, forcing a few of the sex sessions to turn into lecture sessions before finally passing.

At the end of the day, Mo Ran would still wait outside the door of the lectures even when his time with Chu Wanning academically was over, carrying a bag of snacks. Qixin Elder is the shibo of the two young masters of Sisheng Peak, Xue Meng and Mo Ran, followed by Shi Mei and the shixiong of the Yuheng Elder. Qixin Elder grew up in Wubei Temple, taken in by Master Huaizui; as a result, his temperament is similar to his Shizun. If he were to like someone, he would not openly admit his feelings to the other person. He would observe and, at times, accept things, knowing that it was never meant to be.

Nonetheless, when he truly wants to protect someone, he does not care what cruel method is being used. During his youth and times of being the only disciple, Master Huaizui would take him out on strolls as he looked through the items in the stalls. When (Y/N) was a young child, he was quite the troublemaker, quite the contrast to his current reserved self.

At times, (Y/N) will escape Wubei Temple or at least try to escape, although most attempts fail due to his Shizun’s high skills. His life in Wubei Temple has always been boring; he wants a companion. Once he pleaded to Master Huaizui to get a Shidi, only to be rejected. He has no idea the reason why Master Huaizui only picked him as his disciple. His memories of the years before eight years old were wiped clean. It’s like in the blink of an eye, he got out of the womb, and then he was in Wubei Temple.

Secluded with his literature reading and learning materials specifically selected by Master Huaizui to observe the knowledge from. He wasn’t able to read intimate stuff until he got out of Master Huaizui’s control. (Y/N) put into thought his emotions for his Shidi. The platonic feelings merged into romance. Wrong as it is, (Y/N) contained it. Sealing it within him. To not be heard and to not be seen. Watch in silence as things unfold in front of him.

Chu Wanning is stubborn, unwilling to allow his Shixiong to get hurt for his sake, and tightly grips the token. The Qixin Elder pulled harder.

The bloodhour token broke in half. One half in Chu Wanning’s palm, the other in (Y/N). (Y/N) slapped Chu Wanning at the last minute, the first time he raised his hand to his Shidi.

The man that never once hit Shidi has hit him.

Startled, Chu Wanning dropped his token. Mo Ran grabs the broken bloodhour token fallen to the ground. And the victims have already been decided. Vines took hold of both Mo Ran and (Y/N), draining their blood.

As expected, Chu Wanning picked Mo Ran over him. Although the Qixin Elder knows that Chu Wanning attempted to save Mo Ran first because (Y/N) could last longer, nonetheless, there was the other side of him that was saying it was because Chu Wanning favors Mo Ran over him.

Anger and jealousy rushed to his head, leading to him spitting out more blood.

Xia Sini and Da Sini are the new disciples under Xuanji Elder. Xia Sini is Chu Wanning. Da Sini is (Y/N). Nobody is aware of that, other than some other elders. In this identity of theirs, Da Sini is the older brother of Xia Sini. Ever since the incident of the slap, Chu Wanning has been interacting less with his Shixiong. Conceivably, that was the best result; lack of contacts is desirable in the midst of rejection.

(Y/N) assumes that he has been spoiling Chu Wanning too much; the slap is necessary in getting Chu Wanning to clear his mind. No apologies needed. Truth and honest thoughts are as obvious as the day.

At the sight of Xia Sini, the Qixin Elder is reminded of the sweet past between them. Shidi’s younger self. The naive smile of Chu Wanning. Moments where (Y/N) shares his candies with Chu Wanning. The origami folding teaching that Shixiong would share with his Shidi. The joy and the laughter. How nostalgic and now unfamiliar it has become with each passing year.

People change with time, like he and his Shidi, all becoming strangers and co-workers in the end.

He wondered if things would have been much different if Chu Wanning had never met that four-year-old starving orphan. If he and Chu Wanning had never stepped out of Wubei Temple.

To live in a lie would have been much easier on his heart to take in comparison to this current situation he was in.

In the midst of all the chaos, the Qixin Elder has long fallen for the Yuheng Elder. His first companion in Wubei Temple. Shidi. Hidden by his smile and easygoing facade, the seed of obsession grew as the years passed. Innocent love turns romantic. He grew worried about the people that Chu Wanning would hang out with. Uneasy about the possibility that any of them could steal his Shidi from him.

Chu Wanning was his to begin with. He wouldn’t allow anyone to steal his possessions. (Y/N) knows that Chu Wanning struggles with openly showing his emotions. Nevertheless, the first disciple of Master Huaizui never taught Chu Wanning how to. Why? The Shixiong does not want to risk his Shidi being stolen from him by another.

The heart was reassured at the sight of how scared the disciples of the other elders were of Chu Wanning. Rumors spread. The Shixiong did not clear Chu Wanning’s name but only stood by and watched as others isolated themselves from him. Uncomfortable stares everywhere that Chu Wanning went. Chu Wanning, all alone as he waited for his Shixiong to sit next to him in Mengpo Hall. All the years in Sisheng Peak, only (Y/N) ever sat next to him.

It made Chu Wanning feel a sense of comfort within being near his Shixiong. Having a Shixiong, one that followed him no matter what path he took, made him grow dependent on the man. Chu Wanning couldn't imagine a life without his Shixiong there. The loneliness and having nobody to depend on were too cruel.

Such intimate dependency. Chu Wanning mistook his feelings for his Shixiong as platonic.

The Qixin Elder is deeply in love with the Yuheng Elder, acknowledging it as a sinful romance. All those years, Chu Wanning remained unaware of his shixiong's romantic feelings for him. Why? Nobody would understand. If one of them were a female, that would explain it since it’s only normal for a female or a male to find attraction toward the opposite sex.

But they were the same gender. Shixiong and Shidi. A male can’t love another man; even if it were possible, it would not be accepted. It should be more of a brotherly relationship between the two males. In the end, it became like this. In love with each other, with nobody having the courage to admit it directly to the other person.

Dreams bring comfort. Only within a dream could they find comfort in the arms of each other, limbs entangled with the other. Chu Wanning rarely has those dreams. Quite the contrast to the Qixin Elder’s dreaming routine. The faint memories of his Shidi riding his intimate flesh. Each roll of the hips against one another. Pleads for more. He gained more profit through pretending. Mo Ran does not know that. The boy clings to any affection given by others; he takes it for genuineness. Mo Ran cherished the Qixin Elder to the extent that he married him in his past life. Never once did the man notice the pure disgust within the other as Taxian Jun forcefully took him within the chambers.

The Qixin Elder hid his fears so well that those who spent time with him often did not know them. Chu Wanning is aware that the Qixin Elder, like any other mortal, has fears; he does not ask him to share since it is personal. The Qixin Elder was slow on his sword flying; nonetheless, Mo Ran and Chu Wanning took it as him enjoying the scenery in mid-flight. Never once did the man feel so vulnerable and exposed to the point that he wanted to spit blood out of hatred and cry his heart out. Too shameful. Only after a while did he finally catch up to the two, only to hear those dreadful words of Mo Ran as the young man confessed love to his Shidi.

“Why did you leave so quickly at the sight of Miss Eighteen’s corpse? Did you have a guilty conscience perhaps?”

The two guards tasked with the questioning asked (Y/N) in the morning of the second day of the incident. The rice porridge was left untouched on the wooden table as (Y/N) spoke out a lie of having hemophobia. The fear of blood scares him, and that was why he left instead of staying. The guards exchanged glances as if pondering whether or not to let this issue drag further.

“Hemophobia, huh…?” Guard A is not convinced at all.

“How could a cultivator in the Attack category be afraid of blood?” Guard B does not believe that lie at all.

“Where were you before we found Miss Eighteen dead?”

The male disciple under Xuanji Elder answered truthfully this time, “In my assigned room.”

“Was there anyone with you to prove that you were in your room?” Guard A continues to pester the man.

A soft female voice came and interrupted the trio.

“He was with me.”

She got placed in the same area as he did. He remembers getting a glimpse of her leaving her courtyard; however, they never interact.

Wan’er, a shimei of Kunlun Taxue Palace, spoke out the lie to get (Y/N) out of the situation. Robes made from frozen mist silk fit around her curves perfectly, as her peach blossom eyes show the innocence of a virgin maiden.

Guard B stares too long, only to snap out of it when Guard A smacks him in the head.

“A man alone in a room with a female is improper.” Guard A firmly stated. “But I suppose that you're off the hook for now.”

With that, Guard A and Guard B left the premises. Leaving the previously questioned man with the female that got him out of the situation. (Y/N) stares at the backside of the guards, watching to ensure that the guards truly left. If even one were to secretly stay and listen in, his lie might be exposed even with the help of the stranger. When the shadows of the guards are gone, he breathes a sigh of relief before he stares at the shimei who saved him.

He gives a slight bow to the female in gratitude for her saving him.

“Thank you.” If not for Wan’er, he might have already gotten locked up without any ability to explain himself further.

“There’s no need to thank me, sir. This is the least I could do for what you did for me back then.” (Y/N) lifts his head and looks confused. “And you are…?” He has no recollection of interacting with anyone from the Kunlun Taxue Palace.

“Have you already forgotten our near-death experience in the cave, disciple of Sisheng Peak?”

One high-A-rank vengeful spirit chased a female disciple into the deepest part of the forest. Branches stepped and tripped Wan’er in the process. When death approached her, a clang of a sword echoed and slashed an energy wave at the spirit. It injures the spirit that growls at the new presence. The boy snatches the wrist of Wan’er, pulling her up from the ground and running with her.

At that time, (Y/N) had only been a disciple under Xuanji Elder for two years. No holy weapon to aid him. That sword that he used as a distraction was the one that was distributed to all Sisheng Peak disciples on his 10th day of becoming a disciple for self-defense.

A spirit of that rank shouldn’t be in the Basin Evergreen Broadleaf forest of Sichuan Province at all. Defeating a spirit of that level at their current state is a death sentence. The only option that they have is running away.

Little Wan’er let the strange boy lead her further into the forest. The screeches from the spirit persisted on their trail. The sounds of trees being slammed down as the spirit forced its way through the forest. There seems to be no way out of the situation. The forest stretched for miles and miles. Every tree replicates the others; it felt as if they had been going around and around in circles without knowing. Little Wan’er and the boy run out of stamina.

SCREE—

The boy’s grip remained on the female’s wrist; it weakened from tiredness before he regained his grip and pulled the female into hiding within a cave.

The moment that they stepped into a cave, a blue barrier formed surrounding the cave, trapping them inside. They were safe from the spirit at the expense of being trapped inside.

The boy signals with his free hand for silence.

The spirit paused near the entrance of the cave. The spirit roamed the entrance of the cave back and forth. The scent of the two people ended near the entrance. The spirit’s eyes sharply noticed the two people within the cave, and it charged forward.

The two quickly backed off out of instinct.

CRASH! CRASH! CRASH!

The shadowy spirit slams itself against the barrier. The barrier bounces the spirit back. The spirit charges again; the barrier emitted a dazzling light, blinding the two inside the cave. Once the light dims, the spirit is no longer there. No sight of the barrier at all. No screams of agony. Nothing.

Did the spirit finally run off?

(Y/N) and little Wan’er’s naive mindset during that time was relieved, as they were safe, or so they thought. (Y/N) proceeded to head out of the barrier only to find that it was blocked off. Little Wan’er gives it a try, and the barrier does not budge either.

They were stuck there.

“Let’s see if there's another way out.” The boy uses his fire spiritual element to create a ball of fire in his palm. Bringing a small light to the cave. At least they could see where they're heading. Little Wan’er trails behind the boy until they suddenly stop.

The boy and the little girl paused. Little Wan’er behind him looked at the boy, confused and oblivious to what he had seen.

The boy has stepped onto a human bone.

Memory of the past incident in the cave flashed through (Y/N)’s mind as he recollected it. “You’re her?”

“Correct.” Wan’er, the disciple of Kunlun Taxue Palace, nodded.

The man stares at her, examining her features that have matured over the years to the point that he couldn't recognize her at a glance. They have gone through life and death together, yet he so easily moved on with his life. Drifting ashore and growing his power. His journey does not stop after one danger.

He has sacrificed half of his lifeblood to create a way of escape for the two of them. The carved blood spell on the walls of the cave. He has changed and uses his blood as a sacrifice to pave the way. The spell of the barrier weakened and soon collapsed, allowing him and her to escape.

Wan’er has to assist him along the way as his bloody self gets escorted to Sisheng Peak. Wan'er left after he reached the entrance. The Xuanji Elder, his Shizun, Shu Yunjia, got his wits scared out of him at the sight of the bloody disciple of his. The last time Shu Yunjia saw his disciple was when he asked him what place is the best for meditation, and he gave the response “Basin Evergreen Broadleaf Forest.” For the forest has an abundant supply of spiritual qi and lowlife spirit animals roaming around, good for meditation without interruption.

In the end, he sent his own disciple to a jaw of a gaping tiger, for this was the first time that Shu Yunjia saw anyone return this bloody.

Wan’er told the Xuanji Elder and the sect leader present at that time about the barrier and the sacrificial 10-year lifeblood. The elders of Sisheng Peak have not much faith in his recovery, even predicting the possibility that he might be crippled for the rest of his cultivation life. Unable to cultivate. Forever

For the next few days, (Y/N) has been guilt-ridden for his actions. He has heard from Wan’er and the others that Miss Eighteen died. That he has wronged Mo Ran. Fallen into the illusion trap set by Hua Binan. Reacted according to Hua Binan’s plan. He was aware that it was an illusion to harm his relationship with Mo Ran; even so, at the sight of it, it sent a haunting chill down his spine.

Why was Hua Binan specifically targeting him in the illusions? Why didn’t anyone else see the same thing as he did? What did Hua Binan benefit from doing that?

He wondered if Mo Ran felt deeply wronged at the sight of him leaving. Another part of (Y/N) contracted this idea, pushing forward the claim that Mo Ran was his past life’s murderer and doesn't deserve his support in this life.

Will he be willing to push away his past grudges so that he won’t become a pawn of Hua Binan’s plot?

For he is not willing to forgive the man who killed him and become a haunting memory for the rest of his reincarnation so easily. Mo Ran will not be let off the hook. He has gotten some intel from others throughout these days, and he somewhat has an idea of where the prison is. He still hasn’t confirmed it himself, as during those past days, he did not have the courage to take the first step to visit Mo Ran and Xia Sini.

The meat buns are warm in the bag. It was odd. (Y/N) recalls his first meal in Peach Blossom Springs: three steamed buns brought by Mo Ran. He supposedly might as well pay Mo Ran back using the same food that Mo Ran offered him. However, wouldn't that be repaying Mo Ran for the meal rather than an apology for the quick leave?

(Y/N) decided to pick some milk candy from the candy stall nearby. He could offer some for Chu Wanning as well since he remembered reading something about how the Yuheng Elder loves sweets. He paused when he recalled that Mo Ran likes spicy food over sweet ones. He went through some back and forth with his internal self and gave in, deciding to buy one more thing before heading off.

That being two sets of scallion pancakes with chili oil.

His hands were filled with the bags of food and candy. His mind pondered how he would interact with Mo Ran.

Another dreadful thought came up: What if the feathered tribe guard guarding that place doesn't allow any visitors?

Wouldn't that mean he purchased it all for nothing? Why didn't he think of that sooner?

“Why are you still here?!” Somebody snapped him out of his daze.

(Y/N) turns around only to meet a feathered tribe guard. “I planned to visit a friend. Has there been any issue?”

“Everyone else is gathered around the Dewsip Pavilion to hear Miss Eighteen’s murderer’s explanation, and you’re out here visiting a friend?”

“Ah…” Before then, (Y/N) had been meditating and letting his spiritual qi circulate inside his room. He was oblivious to the meeting. Nobody informed him. His mind went back to hearing the footsteps of Wan’er outside his room; however, at that point, he could not stop at the most crucial point of the meditation due to the possibility of major backlash from the interruption. It appeared that Wan’er wanted to inform him about the Dewsip Pavilion, but she, noticing him in his qi meditation, decided to not interrupt. A smart choice on her part, as if she were to barge in, the circulation would break and his internal organs would have been damaged as a result.

That also explained how the usual busy streets have been nearly wiped clean of any pedestrians and most of the food vendors were gone.

“Apologies, I was meditating in my room and was unable to hear the outside news.”

He could hear the guard scoff at him. “You cultivators truly are doing the most random stuff at ridiculous timing. Go ahead to Dewsip Pavilion, young fellow.”

With that, the guard left him there.

He stood there, and he went ahead to ask, “Where’s the pavilion?” But by then, the feathered tribe guard that was previously talking to him was nowhere in sight.

No shadow. In a flash, he can’t find him again. How odd.

(Y/N) thought that they’re truly quick on their feet.

Now that he got told that Mo Ran was at the Dewsip Pavilion, what could he do?

He looks at the food stalls, deciding to ask the street vendors that he previously interacted with for the location.

No one in sight.

Were the vendors not there just a few seconds ago? How did they disappear so quickly?

Bewildered, the man turns back around.

He ponders whether he should look around for somebody to ask for directions or just go back to his original plan of looking for the prison cave. His hands carried bags of food and candy. He would look like an idiot in front of others if he were to bring them to the Dewsip Pavilion.

He chose to play it safe and walk in the direction of the prison cave, planning to leave the bags there and wait if there was nobody.

Indeed. (Y/N) spotted Chu Wanning inside the cave. Chu Wanning’s 14 year old form next to a steaming pot of stew. The sweet, tingly aroma coming out of the pot drifted into the man’s nose. Strange. (Y/N) remembered that Chu Wanning can’t cook. That soup base must have been made by Mo Ran, and Chu Wanning is simply watching it.

Out of formal politeness and the awareness that Xia Sini is the Yuheng Elder, the words that he spoke at least a million times throughout his years as a disciple of Sisheng Peak slip automatically out of his mouth: “Present. Disciple (Y/N) from Xuanji Elder. Greetings to Yu—”

He corrected himself at the last second. “Xia Sini.”

Chu Wanning lets out a hum, not paying much mind to his presence. He observes the young man, wondering if Chu Wanning caught on. Fortunately, Chu Wanning’s eyes were glued to the soup. Like a cat watching a catnip ball. After a while, Chu Wanning turns to him, only to ask, “Why aren't you at the Dewsip Pavilion?”

He was embarrassed to admit that he doesn't have a sense of direction and does not know where the Dewsip Pavilion is. (Y/N) quickly changed the topic. “I bought some food and milk candy for you and Mo Ran.” (Y/N) put the bags on the table.

“Candy?” Chu Wanning’s interest piques at the mention of a sweet before he collects himself. “Which bag has the candy?” The diary’s mention of Chu Wanning’s love for sweets is truly on point. (Y/N) points to the bag with the milk candy. Chu Wanning’s hand reached in and grabbed a handful; only to realize how greedy he seemed, he let a few drops inside the bag before pulling back with two milk candies.

He quickly unravels the two and moves aside his white face mask, enough to expose just his mouth, and pops them into his mouth.

A thought pops up in (Y/N)’s mind as he watches it happen. How should he handle the situation once Mo Ran comes back?

Everyone gathered around the entrance of the cave upon a member from the Feathered Tribe calling everyone out for an important meeting. Before then, the cultivators were going on with their day until they heard the ringing of bells within their heads. The internal ringing stops with the voice of Miss Eighteen, “Return to the entrance of the Domain of Fiends.” Those who were not assigned that domain, as confused as they were, ended up following through with the command.

During that time, (Y/N) was searching for his diary. It has been a while since he read it. The last time was him reading it the day before he got selected. That was the time when he connected the dots that Xia Sini is Chu Wanning due to the same nickname; however, something changed from the original plotline. Chu Wanning was supposed to have the appearance of a 6-year-old; instead, he ended up having the appearance of a 14-year-old. The additional being that now Chu Wanning wears a white mask to hide the fact that he shares features similar to his original form.

He has already avoided every possibility of changing the story, even changing his Shizun from his past life’s decision.

The changes and plotline still end up going haywire from the original route because of him. Different events continue to occur as a result of him barely existing.

If he’s remembering right, the next event would be the accusation of killing the member of the Feathered Tribe. And the running that comes from it—he needed to read that part once more to jog his memories. Only to find that it wasn’t there.

He remembered he had brought it with him to Peach Blossom Springs. But he couldn’t find it anywhere. Did he lose it on the way?

His thought of worry was interrupted by the sudden ringing in his ears, followed by the order to go to the entrance of the Domain of Fiends.

It was too late.

There were already people gathering around the sight of Eighteen’s fragile neck broken around the replica of Jiangui. Among the people included were Shi Mei, Xue Meng, Ye Wangxi, and most of all, his Shixiong.

“M-murder!” The first word that came out.

“You killed Miss Eighteen!” The second.

All those chattering cultivators around them. Pointing fingers. Jumping to conclusions.

Mo Ran was covered in blood, unable to explain himself. He was unprepared to be accused out of nowhere. He thought that once his trial was over with Xia Sini, he could go back to his Shixiong to get a proper answer.

“It wasn’t me…”

Xia Sini shields his body, covering him from all the accusations being thrown.

Mo Ran’s body shook at the contact of small pieces of rocks being thrown at him. It hits him in his shoulder, cheek, and forehead. Hard enough for bruises to form, not blood.

His eyes scan around to notice Shi Mei’s look of terror. Beside Shi Mei was his past life’ Shixiong, the other one that he cherishes the most. The heartstring within Mo Ran snaps at the expression that his Shixiong has. His Shixiong was terrified and disgusted. His eyes meet his Shixiong’s. His shixiong muttered a few words to Shi Mei and excused himself.

Mo Ran’s heart went from confusion to anger to sorrow once more. His Shixiong does not believe him at all. Not even willing to attempt to prove his innocence. His Shixiong was so cold-hearted.

“…” Expected from his Shixiong.

“How dare you touch a member of the Feathered Tribe!” Shouted another, putting an end to Mo Ran’s delirium.

Mo Ran closed his eyes once more, focusing on the situation at hand. Pushing aside the conflicts of his heart. “I didn’t kill her.” His voice drops low. “At least hear me out before you decide to lock me up.”

Nobody wants to listen to him. Nobody cares about what’s the truth or not. They only want to believe what they see with their eyes, not the context.

“You’re covered in her blood!” A high-pitched voice said, “What more is there left to say?!”

Another agreed with the first one, “That’s right!”

“Lock them up!”

One of the last people other than his Shizun and his Shixiong that Mo Ran expected to stand up for him, Xue Meng, finally at the end of his patience with the crowd, spoke out.

“Everyone settled down—“

Before Xue Meng could even say another word, he got interrupted again. “Who the hell are you to order us around?!”

“Why should we listen to you?!” The crowd only gets even more heightened by the idea of listening to nobody at a time like this, especially someone from the same sect as the killer.

“YOU—“

Xue Meng, a spoiled young master of Sisheng Peak, hated it when somebody interrupted him. However, he is also aware that Sisheng Peak was a lower cultivation sect, leading to people from the upper realm being more arrogant around him. Xue Meng kept his mouth shut.

As he glared at Mo Ran for causing such trouble.

“Xue Meng, you believe me…?” Xue Meng huffed at that ridiculous question coming from his foolish cousin. “Yeah, right, you damn mutt! Always causing trouble and having me clean up for you!” Xue Meng’s face heated up from both frustration and embarrassment. “Aren’t you supposed to be the older one?!”

Mo Ran, at a loss for words, knows he is to be blamed for all of this. “…”

“Xue Meng…”

Xue Meng snaps his head toward the crowd. “Would it kill all of you just to listen?! Stop jumping to conclusions like a bunch of frogs and flies!”

Shi Mei stepped forward. “Everyone, I could also vouch for them.” Shi Mei’s voice is soft and easily gets drowned out by the loud noises of everyone else.

Ye Wangxi stepped forward as well.

(Y/N) leans against the peach blossom tree in his courtyard in Peach Blossom Springs. His heart is pounding against his chest as he tries to catch his breath. What he saw near the cave wasn’t the body of Eighteen, but the replica of his body whose chest was penetrated by a black sword. His bloody corpse with a hollow bleeding hole within his chest that is pierced by Bugui.

Voices of others were blocked out. He couldn’t hear anything other than the pounding of his chest. As soon as his eyes came in contact with Mo Ran, he saw him covered in blood as Mo Ran’s eyes grew an eerily purple, staring through his soul. He felt his throat tighten, and he quickly retracted his gaze.

He excused himself from the crowd.

He has expected to see the body of Eighteen from his recollection of the diary, but instead he gets greeted by his own body. Most of all, he hates how vulnerable he becomes from the sight. He knows that it was an illusion, but something about it felt so vivid.

For in his memory, it had happened before.
