On Thursdays class (26/2/26) in our final week of sculpture, I’ve finished the final touches on my sculpture and took it to be photographed in the photography room.

At first we took photos of my sculpture and I ( I modelled it to show it’s original purposes) posed in front of a thin-film material to capture my silhouette, Kara walker’s silhouette art inspired me to take this photo. We also took a few with me behind a black background and played around with different coulored lights and casted different shadows with them.

I especially love the two where my shadows are casted in blue and red, it reminds me of when I was creating shadow figures for my animation course. I then played around with a bunch of different filters after I took them, I only focused on changing the brightness and tones of the photos to more accentuate the colours and shadows ( par one where the background is completely black and your focus is primarily on the sculpture and I ).

Then I took a few with only the sculpture being suspended from a rail, so you could appreciate it on its own. Again we played around with different coloured lights and took photos from different angles. I thought the colours give the sculpture an other worldly feel, which again relates back to my animation course. I also think that you appreciate the detail of the paper-maché patterns on my sculpture when it’s by itself and casted in different lights.

It took a lot of fiddling around before I got my sculpture to look the way it does, but I’m over all happy with how it’s turned out.

For Tuesdays class (25/2/26) I thought about how I wanted to design my wire supports and how I could make this sculpture stand by itself. I decided to curve the wire supports, so that it could stand like a table. To then make the supports look more visually interesting I added two sets of curved-spiky wire( that I taped together) to the supports and then covers them in masking tape,to tie in more to the sculpture’s design. It then got me thinking of what else this sculpture could be. I did a little bit of artist research into Emmett Moore, an interior designer based in Miami who creates unusual and eccentric sculpture pieces (using second hand and unconventional materials), that also have a practical function. Below futures some rough sketches of what else this sculpture could be.

For Mondays class in our final week of sculpture ( 23/2/26) I completed the paper-mache on the other side of my sculpture and waited for it to dry while I thought of how I was going to balance this on my shoulders.

Through some guidence form my lecturers, we thought the the best was to attach this sculpture on to me was to make or get some metal shoulder pads that would be attached to the sculpture and then clasp into place on my shoulders. But due to the lack of metal that day, we thought about having just regular shoulder pads and attaching them to my sculpture, then attaching Velcro straps to the pads so they can loop around my arms.

But in the end we decided to try getting a piece of thick wire, making a loop with it (shown on rough sketch), attaching onto the sculpture using masking tape and then adding rope that connected to either side of the loop which would go through my armpits and hold the sculpture steady. It’s not the prettiest design but I was really satisfied that it stayed on my shoulders. Tomorrow we’ll see if we can make it look a little nicer of try other methods of stabilizing my sculpture.

For Fridays class (13/2/26). I realised that the two pieces of arching wire on the claw on the left side of sculpture were different lengths and made the claw look wonky. So I spent the first bit of the morning tweeking the wire so that they would be even lengths to each other.

I then also had to rearrange the spikes attached to the wire arches as they were moved in the process of manipulating the arches. This all took me a bit of time to get right, but once I was finished, the claw looked a lot better and made putting the papier-mache over it a lot easier. Hopefully by the next Monday class I’ll have it finished and I can experiment more with the sculpture and with photographing it.

Thursdays Class and Artist research

For Thursdays class (12/2/26), I focused on completing the right side of my sculpture using papier-mâché. I’m happy with how it’s turned out but I then started to think of other textures or patterns I could add to it, to make it a bit more interesting. Over the course of the week, I was doing some artist research on Rebecca Horn. She was a German artist in the 1970s and worked in a variety of different mediums that include film, photographs, sculpture and spatial installations.

Through her sculpture work, Horn explores the harmony between body and space. This is shown in her works such as her ‘finger gloves’; long spindly sticks that act as extensions of her fingers, ‘ Still from the feathered Prison Fan’; a feather piece that encloses the whole top half of the body. These works have inspired me to think of other materials I could use to add to my piece when it’s complete. It’s also has me thinking about how I want my sculpture interact with the environment and space around it when i take it to the photography room when it’s done. I debated on the idea of putting it in a sort of city environment as a nod to my animatic I’ve made in my animation course, but I’ll still keep thinking of other ideas until then.

For Tuesdays class I worked on bending my sculpture into a less curved shape and then made sure that all the wire was secured in place with masking tape. I wasn’t sure what material I wanted to use to cover the wire, but I ended up choosing newspaper-like paper, as I thought anything else would be too heavy for this delicate piece. Tearing the paper up into tiny pieces and building them up on top of each other using water and glue is a slow process, but I’m happy with how it’s coming along. Although I realised that on the left claw, the wire is slightly uneven, so I might go back and redo that side if I have the chance.

For the first Monday of sculpture (9/2/26), we spent the beginning of the day thinking of verbs that relate to our theme, then chose our favourites out of the words and made some sketches inspired by both the verb and our theme. Before I started drawing I first experimented with casting shadows onto different types of textured surfaces and then drawing the shadow casted on them.

After this I concluded that I would like to make a sculpture of my prototype dress piece I made in fashion (inspired by my toothy looking shadow) and make it on a larger scale, this idea was inspired by the verbs; claw, bite and engulf . To make the piece I started this by cutting pieces of thick wire for the curved base and then using thinner wire I made the tooth like angles of my mouth-like form. It was a bit tricky to manipulate the wire into the shape that I want, but so far I’m happy with the progress I’m making.
