Reassembled - 2P!CanAme Ficlet Part Three (Final): The Right Decision
I stared at the ground silently.
I heard Matt shift on the couch. I heard him stand up and take a step towards me.
".... I missed you too, Alfie..." He whispered softly.
My head snapped up to look at him. "M-Matt..." I took a hesitant step closer.
Suddenly Matt met me halfway, and pulled me into a tight hug. I felt him bury his face in my neck and I let my eyes shut.
I squeezed him, remembering the days when we were little and we would hug like this all the time. I remember clinging to Oliver's apron and running into Matt's arms when I was picked on. I chuckled softly, even if I was older than him, he always seemed to be the one taking care of me.
He rocked us back and forth, humming softly.
"Why did you choose me? I mean, Matt, you care about the doe eyed blonde so fucking much." I pulled away, hesitant, unsure if I really wanted to hear the answer.
"Alfie, you're my fucking brother, for christ's sakes... I'm not going to let them take you from me." He stared at the ground for a moment. "If the world were to burn to the ground, I'd only have you to stand by, because you are.. the closest person to me, Al.. dumbass.. I've been through so fucking much with you, I'm not going to trade all the years for anything..."
I felt myself tear up. "D-don't fuckin' say shit like that, Matt."
Matt looked away, biting his lip, "I mean every fucking thing I say, Al. I don't want you getting some ridiculous thought that I only chose you because I had to or something equally stupid as that." The Canadian faltered. "I chose you because I need you... I... I love you, Alfie." He whispered.
I stared at him, my heart beating rapidly.
I couldn't remember a time when anyone had ever told me they loved me. Not Oliver, not Francis, not any of my partners, not even Matt himself.
I had to breathe. "M-Matt..."
I watched him kick invisible dust, his hands shoved in his pockets, refusing to look at me.
My lips twitched a smile. "Heh... I love you too, Matt."
I grinned widely then, "Hey, we should fuck."
Matt glared, "Is that all you ever think about?"
I wiggled an eyebrow suggestively at him.
The Canadian rolled his eyes, scoffing. "Fucking hopeless..."
He paused on his way leaving the room, looking straight into my eyes. "Alfie... I made the right decision."
