In both a literal and emotional sense, in this case. It’s been a looong time since I picked up my tablet pen and just went to town, so I’m rusty with things like body shapes and positioning. Explanations below the cut.
There’s a lot of sadness this month, in both the world at large, and here on Tumblr. Tension’s high in the house too, and it kind of bled into this pic. The end of the event is coming up, and Vanya’s at the end of his rope. Watching a loved one deteriorate is one of the most god-awful things in the world, and a lot of Vanya’s feelings stem from my own experiences with the subject matter. It’s a bit raw for him, and a little exhausting for me at times. At least the end is in sight. I’m going to give them a really, really happy winter for all this misery.
So I felt compelled to jump onto the SU bandwagon in terms of OC creation, because two of my friends decided to convert their main Hetalians over, just for funsies. ‘Elena’ turned into Blue Quartz, a soldier that is utterly enamored with her diamond, a living, breathing goddess as far as Elena is concerned. I don’t see her getting much use, but I finally got it out on paper. There was an idea for Annie as either a mother-of-pearl style grey pearl, or a black pearl, who would have gladly thrown her lot in with the rebellion if only to get away from her boss (and her 49 other pearls), but I haven’t drafted that yet.
More pretty Elena, because I don’t have an opportunity to draw her very often. She wouldn’t have been quite the ridiculous smug-lord that the Prince was (at least not outwardly), but instead poured herself into an education the likes of which wouldn’t have been open to her anywhere else, in the way only her own republic would have allowed. The amount of little birch bark notes, lesson pieces, and contract slips found buried in the peat and bogs around where the former country sat suggests a really, really high literacy rate, particularly among women, and you can bet your ass she would’ve taken advantage of it.
Speaking of women, have a bewildered Novgorod, trying to figure out what the fuck he’s looking at. ‘Shit how do I conjegate that are those boobs or is that facial hair EVERYONE IS WEARING A DRESS SOMEONE HELP-’
So me and TheBeautyofLiberty have started a period-set piece between a late 14th century France and the Republic of Novgorod. Turned out that the Haseanic League didn’t just trade regularly with France, but had considerable influence over trade routes in Western and Central Europe, and guess who was a power player in all this! I love these little tidbits one digs up during research. Anyhow, We floated the idea back and forth of the two meeting, and trying to seduce the other to get the upper hand in trade negotiations. Knowing what forms of verbs and nouns to use, however, would be a good start.
The last three are because I realized that I had very few reaction images for the Prince, especially ones where he isn’t looking smug as fuck. I made a mistake when I was first crafting the old man, and he became very, very expressive. It makes for a good contrast to Muscovy and his very typically neutral, level facial expressions, but it’s not technically culturally correct. I could blame a culture gap between Northwest and Central Russia, or his proximity to Poland, Scandinavia, and the Balts for his expressiveness, but fuck it. It’s funny. You have to take some liberties, and he’s an old coot. I can get away with some things, right?
