Could you do a 3 act deconstruction of the SU sardonyx arc? :3c
Alright. I’m not sure if the entire arc is meant to be structured like that, but I’ll try.
Setup. The world of SU was already established by the time of this episode, so there’s no need to set it up. But the character of Sardonyx, and Pearl and Garnet’s relationship and past as Sardonyx is introduced. The point of attack is Peridot’s meddling that leads the characters to the main conflict of the arc.
Inciting Incident. Lock In. Pearl’s actions and deception of Garnet lead to the break off between the two of them. The main conflict is introduced to our two characters (4 if you include Ruby and Sapphire).
Escalation. The tension between Pearl and Garnet leads Garnet to want to leave on a trip with Greg and Steven. She is so upset, she breaks apart on the trip.
First culmination. Midpoint. Ruby and Sapphire have a fight. In the end they make up and forgive each other, a foreshadowing of the eventual main culmination when Garnet forgives Pearl.
The goal shifts from avoiding Pearl and hoping the thing blows over to trying to work to forgive her.
Subplots. The biggest chunk of this arc episodes wise. 2 entire episodes are devoted to sideplots. One about developing Amethyst’s feelings of being left out. And the other developing Pearl’s need to be useful to make up for what she did.
Main culmination. The Crystal Gems finally find a way to track Peridot. They end up trapped by her in the ancient ship. Pearl and Garnet get locked up in a chamber they can’t escape. They’re at their lowest point.
New conflict. Twist. Garnet and Pearl talk about their feelings and what happened. It is revealed Pearl’s desire to be part of Sardonyx was due to her history as “just a pearl”. Garnet forgives Pearl. A new goal is established: escaping the ship and capturing Peridot together.
Climax and resolution. Garnet and Pearl fuse into Sardonyx and escape the chamber. They chase down Peridot and together almost catch her. The CG are rejuvenated with new hope, after taking a new step in their relationship moving forward.
