The Shri D Printer
During Shri Khoj 2015, we not only got to see mind boggling new ideas materialise into working models before our very eyes, but also the 3D printer, called the Shri D Printer. If that wasn’t amazing enough, there’s the added bonus that it was made by two students (which, as a side note, may make you question your productivity). We managed to bag an interview with Divij Singh, one of the makers of the printer.
What encouraged you to make a 3D printer? The idea of getting to make a 3D printer is what drew me in. That and the fact that I’d get my own plastic batarang.
Who worked on the 3D printer? Kanishk Vashisht and I, both of XII Science.
What is the first object that you printed? We printed the Batman logo first. We’ve also printed a Shri logo, now.
When did you start working on it? We started working on it last year, after a senior ordered the parts but graduated before building it. Kanishk did the programming, I did the building.
Can you describe how the printer works? It’s a Prusa Mendel Printer. It works by moving on the x,y, and z axis and melts the plastic filament, and sets it down. It moves in a pattern, then moves up a layer and repeats the pattern.
What were the problems you faced while making the printer? We had a lot of issues getting the parts, assembling the printer, and fixing the nozzle which melts the plastic. That said, it worked really well in the Shri Khoj and we’re really happy it worked out.
What is something you can’t wait to print out? One thing I’d love to print is a giant cheeseburger. Which I can eat. Also a model of one of my video game characters.
Any funny instances you remember while making this printer? I remember one of my classmates, Mallika, hanging the printer’s hot plate around her neck. Also burning myself repeatedly while testing the part that melts the plastic.
Any future projects you might be willing to take up? I plan on making a massive statue of Nicholas Cage out of toothpicks. Or I’ll just wait and see what comes up in the future, I doubt I can say no.
If you could change the name from Shri D printer, what would you change it to? *offended glare* I will stick with Shri D Printer.
Where can we find the 3D printer and who all can use it? It is hidden in one of the Physics labs and entry is restricted as it is still being fixed as of now.
Any additional information you would like to give? We owe a big thanks to our teachers, Vinita Ma'am, and Manisha Ma’am. -Bani Ahluwalia, XI-C Batch of 2017

A private company located in eastern China has printed ten full-size houses using a huge 3D printer in the space of a day. The process utilizes quick-drying cement, but the creators are being careful not to reveal the secrets of the technology.
