Who out of the coven do you think you'd have been tempted turned when encountering them as mortals, if time and situations had been different?
I think Lestat would choose Louis in every instance they meet. Louis is his ideal mate even if his brother had not died. For these reasons:
Louis’ darkness is structural, not situational
Louis has a constant sense of alienation
Louis has a moral hypersensitivity
Louis has a tendency to question existence itself
Louis would still resist Lestat
Louis would still judge him and confront himself
Louis questions the morality of vampirism
Louis challenges Lestat’s impulsiveness
Louis refuses to fully surrender
Louis endures
Louis reflects
Louis remains himself
Louis would be more balanced, stable but a but less piercing to Lestat if he was made when he was happy. Louis would be less self-destructive, less consumed by guilt spirals, and more capable of mutual connection.
So their relationship in life would be even better without tragedy:
the attraction would still spark
the fascination would still grow
the choice would still happen
Louis ticks all of Lestat's boxes either way.
Another at the top of my list is Daniel Molloy for several reasons. I think Daniel is the top pick other than Louis. I say this because Daniel is:
Restless, intellectually hungry
Self-destructive
Fascinated by darkness rather than repelled by it
Already obsessed with immortality and meaning
Louis was interested in him (a plus)
In fact I am going to say this: Lestat tends to fall for people who ask too many questions and won’t stop, and Daniel does this. The big difference from Louis de Pointe du Lac is that Daniel wouldn’t moralize first he’d lean in to it. Lestat would find that exhilarating. He would have exactly what he needs in Daniel.
He also would not have driven Daniel mad as Armand did. He is too impulsive to not take what he wants after making his mind up.
I do not believe he would turn Armand as a mortal. He is beautiful but honestly. I do not think he is Lestat's type if we are sticking to the books as a source.
Claudia he would turn without Louis' prompting but only as an adult. She would be another ideal companion. Here is why I say this:
Extremely intelligent
She has the emotional intensity to keep him intrigued
Capacity for cruelty and deep attachment
A refusal to be controlled
Equals with him which is important to Lestat
Question him constantly
Learn quickly and independently
Push against his authority instead of orbiting it
These are all things Lestat actively seeks out. As a child, those qualities become tragic and trapped. They do not appeal to Lestat. He prefers emotional equals. As an adult, they become dangerous and compelling which are exact reasons that she would attract him. The last three reasons on the list are catnip for Lestat. They are things he desires. I do think this relationship would still be explosive in the long run because Claudia would be his equal in a battle of wills., she would see through him faster, outmaneuver him socially and/or emotionally, and she would refuse to play the role he unconsciously assigns to her. I think he would actually prefer her over NIcki.
NIcki if Armand had not broken him I think would have been turned still. I think the relationship would have lasted longer. I think Nicki would have been more functional for a longer period of time... he still would have burned out. I still think He would have ended up in the fire but he would have lived a lifetime or maybe two with him. What makes this interesting is that he never would have met Louis. Who I think (personally) is his perfect companion.
Nicki would be like this:
More functional with less overt madness
More time before breaking
Able to stir Lestat's loneliness
Able to reflect on things he desires or fears
Able to make eternity more interesting
Also he would be fascinating to Lestat due to his nature which is: fragile, volatile, and inwardly collapsing. The existential horror of vampirism and his already fragile mental state along with his dependence on intensity would catch up with him. Nicki turns pain into disintegration. Nicki cannot live with it in the long run. It would still end in tragedy.
Thank you anon for this. I have given this topic thought really only regarding Daniel, Louis, and Claudia on my own but I decided to add a few others since it was open to everyone. I do not think he would change Santiago, Santino or Marius... or even any of the others. He would always turn his mother. He will always turn David TOTBT or not for the simple fact he loves him as his confidante. Lestat cannot let someone so emotionally attached to him die. I think Anne got it right on those he turns. I am not listing them all. I also think he is selfish enough to turn his favorite Architect just for what he brings to the table creatively. He would not have changed Antoine in my opinion if those circumstances had not happened. He is a situational turning. I do not think he was emotionally attached to Antoine. He was using him to make Louis jealous.
