Aamiin. . #day89 of #365 #30032019 #pengamatanbermakna #latepost (di MAN 2 Kota Malang) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvtFRISgmyc/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=16hat1k2qeiob
"Viva Varda!” my friend E texted out of the blue.
E and I haven’t talked for a while, and I didn’t really want to get into anything, so I replied that I too was looking forward to watching Varda by Agnes.
It was only the next day that I realised why E had texted: Agnes Varda has passed away.
It’s a bit strange writing about Agnes V, given that I’m not a Varda connoisseur. I’ve only watched three of her films. The Beaches of Agnes is one of the greatest autobiographical documentaries I’ve come across, if not the best. The first time I saw it, it gave me that feeling that all great at gives, the feeling that anything is possible. The feeling of making you want to go out and make things.
I got into cinema through Fellini. And over the years Linklater, Suleiman, and Von Trier have shown me how to use the medium to work through things in their lives. How to turn the deeply personal cinematic. But there’s no one I’ve come across -- absolutely no one -- that turns the deeply personal into cinema, and does it with so much infectious joy like Agnes Varda.
When a famous person passes away, it’s not obvious that your life would be affected in any way if you don’t actually have a personal relationship with the famous person. Say, Nina Simone, for example. My only relationship with her was her music. And I still have that. And every now and then, I put her playlist on Spotify and she makes me feel things. And that’s the same whether she was alive or dead.
My only contact with Agnes Varda was through her films. And only three films at that. So I know how crazy this might sound, but watching her films made me feel incredibly close to her. Like I actually know her. I had this belief -- belief, not hope -- that I would one day meet her somewhere, and we’d sit down and have a conversation about cinema.
Agnes Varda’s death touched me in a way that other famous people’s passing hasn’t. And for better or worse, my relationship with her films -- the ones I’ve seen and the ones I’ve yet to see -- will change.
Viva Varda!
