So I got caught up on Steven Universe recently, and...you know how in Garnet’s origin story Rose and Perl are consistently referred to as “Rose Quartz and her renegade Perl” by the gems?

The thing is, technically speaking, following Rose is exactly what Perl is supposed to do. Rose is the mastermind, the general, the leader and symbol of the Earth resistance, far and away the bigger threat on paper, so how is it that Perl is the one whose labeled a renegade?

Because the gems have their own structure of privileges and oppressions. Rose is a rebel, yes, but gems of her class are allowed to be violent, allowed to be disruptive (though preferably of other people’s shit), so she’s expressing her rebellion in a way that’s socially acceptable for her, and gem society has been brainwashed into thinking such behavior is acceptable from people like her--like how no one profiles White men as being violent in spite of us being the vast majority of serial killers, spree shooters, and domestic terrorists in this country. Perls aren’t supposed to be violent, though. Perls aren’t supposed to fight back. So in a weird way, they’re right to be more afraid of Perl than of Rose--Rose is a threat to the Earth colony, but Perl is a threat to the very social order of gem society itself.
