I recently found out about a very neat board game called Wingspan, where you assemble birds into combo engines, and went with a strategy called “Put Wincon In Pelican Mouth”

(Every turn, I could both generate a fish and feed it to a pelican for two victory points)

I came in last, but what a way to go out

oh my god, this looks like a blast. it only goes to show, though: putting baby in pelican mouth isn’t a danger to anyone! it’s perfectly safe!

the weird thing about Moana is that I never expected Disney to make a movie with the message, "RESTORE YOUR NATION'S ANCESTRAL SPLENDOR BY RE-ESTABLISHING NAVAL SUPERIORITY"

it wasn’t really clear to me why they even needed to leave their restored perfect island, other than Moana thinking that boats were cool.

I mean they were just going to go look for another island, but they already had one! And they didn’t even seem to have any population pressure, and even if they did, everyone left, so the new island will be just as crowded!

Demon idea: they're egregore-embodiments of ruthlessness and Doing What It Takes, and they're pretty much metaphysical loan sharks. "They never outright lie" is a common belief they do their best to spread.

I like the idea, but I don’t think it fits this story- the magic system, whatever it is, is more about drawing on and extracting power than it is about negotiating the terms of deals. You can be a powerful wizard without any social skills whatsoever- it’s more about navigating the arcane rules of the interface than it is about dealing with demons as people. I’m thinking demons are generally more animalistic, not machiavellian schemers with a powerful bargaining position- but that’s a generalization, there’s lots of different types and the way you have to handle each depends on the sub-school of magic you’re dealing with. 

(The ruthless loan shark types are probably represented somewhere- probably higher-level types, not usually employed unless someone needs their very specific services and they’re out of safer options.)
