Better Days
The sun was bright like the face of a teenager landing their first job. You dragged yourself out of bed in what could only be described as a lamented hop into the notion of broken movements. Bending over to pick up your favorite faded shirt from your early high school days, you popped a knee in a sound that reminded you of stories that lined the news channels left and right. You weren't feeling any better than yesterday, and your body began to take notice. Shrugging it off, you stepped out of your cramped thinking space, and proceeded to meet me in the other room. Your presentation is sloppy, and your general lack of interest is noted. I am not impressed with your appearance, your disposition. You remind me a bit of myself, and I hate that about you. You know this, I've never hidden it. Let me start off by saying you are lazy, and you will never get anywhere in life. I hide my failures by putting you down about your exhibited shortcomings that make me cringe at the thought that you are going to end up just like me. I love you, and I want nothing more than success for you. You need to understand just how much I've tried to level with you, and how many different manners I've approached it. You make me furious with every sneer and snide remark. You are an abomination to my eyes. ..No, I didn't mean that. I just never quite understood how you can manage to be so carefree. I know what ails you at night, the long hours spent awake like a child who is afraid of a reoccurring nightmare that no one understands. The manner in which you dodge mirrors because you are afraid to face the man you are versus who you always thought you would be. I should not be reminding you of your shortcomings, just as you do not feel the need to remind me of my bottomed out job as a parent. Where did I go wrong? Where did you go wrong? Most importantly, how can you get up everyday and face a parent who is crippled by their responsibility, and find yourself still smiling like there is such a thing as better days. Maybe we didn't do so bad after all..
