So we’ve passed 400 parts per million of carbon in our atmosphere. My friends, we are royally fucked. We’ve gotta reduce emissions like 80%, plus take drastic sequestration measures, if we and most other species want to make it through the next couple centuries.
Today my roommate had clinicals, so I got Little Bro off to school. Last year the one time I took him to school, my truck was in the shop so we walked the half mile and it was a huge dramatic production. This year I’ve taken him to school once, and I frontloaded the walk hardcore. Today I took a different approach.
I told Little Bro about climate change in terms a six-year-old can understand. He spent the weekend camping in the redwoods with his mom and when he woke up this morning, the first thing out of his mouth was a story about seeing the trees. So we talked about what climate change will do to the redwoods. Then I asked, “Do you want to walk to school, or drive? Driving is a little easier right now, but will make life a lot harder in the future for you and me and the trees.”
Without hesitation he said, “Walk!” and we strolled to school, talking about trees and fashion and baseball and elves the entire way.
