47 Meters Down (2017)

There are so many shark movies you best come up with an original idea or not even bother making one. Thankfully, 47 Meters Down has a new angle. The ending will be polarizing but for this viewer, there were enough good moments throughout to overlook the cheap shot right before the credits roll.

While vacationing in Mexico, Lisa (Mandy Moore) and Kate (Claire Holt) decide to go watch sharks from a diving cage. Lisa assures her sister everything is safe but Kate’s never dived before. When the crane falls overboard and the cage dragged to the bottom of the ocean, the women are threatened by dwindling air supply and dozens of sharks.

At their best, survival horror movies are both fun and scary. You like seeing the characters explore the different options their situation has presented to them. Lisa and Kate are running out of oxygen. How can they contact the boat above for help? First, by finding a way out of the cage - difficult, as the crane is leaning on the hatch. It’s a puzzle to solve and you’ll enjoy deciphering which paths lead nowhere and which to the film’s conclusion where (hopefully) the two women make it out alive. There are many obstacles in their way. The air is running out, there are predators in the water, Kate’s inexperienced, and - at the depth they’re at - if they surface too quickly, decompression sickness could kill them. That’s assuming the shady-looking crew who brought them to this place haven’t abandoned them entirely.

There are a couple of cheap moments throughout the film, most notably during the ending which was set up beforehand but still frustrates more than it shocks. The film didn't need it. There’s plenty of tension throughout and the setting/premise make for some new shark scenarios to entertain those who love everything from Jaws to Shark Attack 3: Megalodon. I like that opening shot with the red wine spilling in the pool water.

If you see 47 Meters Down (perhaps because you’re getting ready to view the sequel), let me know if some of the underwater shots looked a little weird to you too. Obviously lighting the actresses underwater was tricky so my guess is some post work was done to brighten up the image, resulting in some shoots having the blue straps around the girls’ tanks and masks look extremely bright. I’m not going to doc the film points as I suspect this was my TV’s fault but I want to know if this is an issue others have experienced. There’s more to be done with this film’s premise. On the other hand, it contains satisfying moments for those who check it out. It all depends on how you feel about its ending but I swallowed it like a great white swallows a hapless diver and I won't be the only one. (July 30, 2019)
