READ ALL ABOUT IT! The new year brings new news. Papergirl Birmingham has teamed up with billboard art project 48Sheet - an opportunity which has been worth holding out for. "The reason that we (48SHEET) LOVE the Papergirl concept is because it fits beautifully with EC-Arts objectives to create artistic interventions within public space and we wholeheartedly support anyone with the same objectives to make art accessible." 48SHEET will transform the city of Birmingham into an urban gallery by utilising up to 100 billboards, exhibiting regional, national and international artists work from the 2nd to the 29th April 2012.
The project is one of many from the non-profit organisation EC-Arts. A previous project Beautify the City in 2010 involved Birmingham born artist Lucy Mclauchlan (recently published in The 100 Leading Figures in Urban Art).
"Birds ‘perch’ on the Brutalist-style Birmingham Central Library – a huge inverted concrete ziggurat built in 1974, designed by Architect John Madin." Lucy's murals have received adoring reactions, infusing new life into the building. There's a handsome Flickr set of the artwork taken by Steve Martin awaiting your gaze here. THE PAPEGIRL BIRMINGHAM EXHIBITION Submissions received will be affectionately exhibited in April in the 48Sheet project space at THE MAILBOX Birmingham. Closing date for submissions MARCH 31ST, so reach for your pencil / pen / paint brush / printer / potato, whatever your tools may be and send your art to England's heart. Prizes for any submissions arriving by carrier pigeon. Papergirl is all-inclusive and there are no restrictions on medium, nor on participants’ age, education, gender, location or background. Both emerging and more established artists are welcome to take part. This means that all levels and styles of prints, stickers, posters, photos, stories, illustrations, zines, drawings, paintings, textiles, t-shirts come together in one unique roll.
NEW LOOK LOGO AND FLYER Birmingham based graphic designer and illustrator Claire Hartley has lovingly created a series of logos, flyers, and posters to help identify the project. Claire has been amazing to work with and even though I cannot thank her enough for her time and attention, a twee venture into this territory was made here, here, and here. Deliver or post your submissions to THE FRAMERS, The Custard Factory or THE ELECTRIC CINEMA, 47 Station St, Birmingham. You can send up to 15 pieces, including duplicates. If you have any questions or would like to take part as a ravishingly roadworthy cyclist during the distribution roll & ride email → [email protected] x x P.S. Big Thank you to Pashley Cycles for inclusion of their beautiful Guv'nor and Princess Sovereign bicycles in our flyer.
