Really LOVE your metas. Thank you so much writing them up. And even though I agree that any form of entertainment and story telling should remove the notion of blurred lines in sexual abuse I have doubts that the mass viewer agrees with us.I don't know if you watch Game of Thrones but there was a forceful sexual interaction between Jamie and Cersei Lannister that the director, actors, and some of the viewers have argued it wasn't rape. So I wonder if TBTB poldark will make the same mistakes.

No, I haven't been bitten by the Game of Thrones bug, though notfor not trying. For various reasons it never appealed to me, neither thebooks, nor the adaptation. It makes it difficult to have anopinion on specific events in it.

There are a lot of things that has been seen as acceptablein the past, where opinions, standards and laws have changed. Today,one of the best ways of presenting alternatives to old beliefs andset the tone in our culture, is to do it through entertainment andpop culture. It reflects our time, but it can also influence peopleto change and broaden their horizons. Changes doesn't happen overnight though and some people can't/won't recognise that their viewsare problematic and why, but that doesn't mean it's a failure ordefeat. It'll come. In time.

In this specific case the original material needs an update towork for today's audience, and to stay true to what I believe Grahamwas trying to convey with this story. The main character is veryaffected by the Jacobin ideas of the time – liberté, égalité,fraternité – in Britain definitely the forerunners to thesocialists; Jacobin became synonymous with left-wing ideals. There isa slightly sour comment in one of the later books from one of theCornwall lords, that Poldark might not be a supporter of what theFrench revolution turned into, but at heart he's very much therevolutionary, believing in those ideals. It's a constant in thesebooks and I think it matters when dealing with events in the originalmaterial, and turning it into a script.

It's not a matter of dropping everything that's offensive though,but to look at the way it's presented and for what purpose it's there.There's a difference between showing something for what it is in allits ugliness, and showing something ugly dressed up as desirableand/or acceptable. Some things you simply have to drop because it'snot acceptable today. Others you rewrite for clarity. Since TPTBalready are treading carefully, altering some events and characters,leaving details out entirely while adding others, I do think they areconsidering these matters most carefully. It doesn't mean we can withcertainty say what they'll do with specific scenes in the end.

I think I need to add that I am in no way asking for perfectcharacters. I’m criticising Graham's writing, the way he keptrepeating opinions and views that we quite frankly need to get ridof. There is a very obvious pattern in his books, in particular theway he wrote female characters and how he applied what's not reallylate 18th century values, but those he himself grew upwith. It's a flaw, but it's possible work on that in an adaptation.It's also obvious, IMO, that he himself wasn't unaware of theseshortcomings and tried to work on them when he picked up this seriesagain in the 70s. This is what makes the adaptation truly interestingto me, how TPTB work with the material, the decisions they have madealong the way, and how they interpret Graham's intent.

Having said that, the story as such is interesting too, I won'tdeny that. While I don't agree with some of Ross Poldark's opinionsand actions, I can chuckle in recognition at his barnstormingpersonality and his basic unwavering principles, and how hisexplosive and insurgent disposition keeps getting him into troublethough he's trying to manage it as he grows older.

… And there I'll stop. I have been procrastinating enough today,not doing what I should. Real life is calling my name.
