LONG LIVE AMC DUNDAS SQUARE
As mentioned below, I just saw a session of THE RAID, which I saw at AMC Dundas Square in Toronto, Canada (cnr Yonge & Dundas).
Two things were awesome about this session:
It was screened on their incredible 4K digital system which was one of the crispest and clearest pictures/sound systems I've witnessed in a cinema.
I found out that AMC Dundas charges $6 for any session before midday (which only occurs on weekends BTW). That's more than 50% off their regular $13.50 ticket! So for anyone willing to get up before 12 on a weekend it's hella worth it.
I just arrived in Toronto, and I'm still job hunting i.e. living on a budget, so this sort of price point is perfect for me, and I'm going to take advantage as much as I can... Unfortunately, there are two things which may just stop people like me enjoying these sessions:
I've been hearing around the traps (and reading in the Toronto Star) that AMC is looking to sell off their cinemas in Canada. Whether it's Cineplex or Empire or whoever else who buys them, I have a feeling they may not allow the $6 ticket sales to continue...
A lot of big films aren't getting played there, which coming from a background in distribution doesn't make sense, as this has to be one of the biggest earning cinemas in Canada. Plus they seem to have spent a lot of money installing these state of the art 4K systems in there, so why aren't the film companies supporting that? I think I know the reason, I'd say there's been a bit of corporate bullying behind closed doors, and I'm not gonna name names but I reckon the culprit rhymes with shmineplex.
Let's all cross our wallets and movie-loving fingers that these sessions continue, at least for my poor-ass sake...
