Am I the only one who can't draw fan art for something until I've seen/played/watched/read the thing?

Like not only am I lacking confidence that I will capture the character's personalities/mannerisms/expressions/quirks correctly, but like I physically can't draw them if I don't have a grasp on the characters 70 - 100% Is that just me or ......? ?????
