"The Wonderling" by Mira Bartok is about a little fox foundling (animal human hybrid) and his quest to find himself. . . . I liked this book quite a bit. It reminded me a lot of Oliver Twist mixed with Matilda. I then read the summary on Goodreads and it says the novel is Dickens based. I've been in a middle grade kick so far this year, but this one has more of a darker undertone. Within the first few chapters, a small groundling is being thrown around and the bullies want to throw her over the wall effectively killing her. As someone who enjoys darker books this was very pleasing. There were no deaths or anything but it definitely had more of the undertones of it being possible. . A nicer thing that this book had going for was that our main character could speak to animals, like real animals not hybrids. He even has a friend that is a mouse who wants to be a knight. I also enjoyed the music focus. Miss Carbunkle punishes any orphan for singing or even humming. The power of music prevails though and it is the prime theme. . .
