Crocheted a frog. Out of safety eyes until I get more ordered.
The two materials I chose to use is wax and water. Wax and water do not mix since waxes are organic compounds that are hydrophobic causing separation between the two materials when they are together. I chose to demonstrate the relationship between solid wax and water in a form of a block of wax with carved circles of multiple sizes where water is deposited into and on the surface as well. Water molecules are attracted to each other in a uniform or constant direction so when they are on top of a surface, they form a stable arrangement called surface tension. On top of a wax surface, the water is caused to bead up instead of spreading out. The wax in this sculpture is holding the water on top of its surface. The two materials “forgive” each other in this sculpture since the wax is holding the water on top of its surface, giving the formless water a form. The water in the carved surfaces demonstrates that water becomes forms within a container while the water on top of the smooth surface top shows that water is able able to have a solid looking, round form without being in a container. Even though it seems like water and wax won’t work together because their molecules don’t mix, the wax help out the water by keeping the water on its surface without the water sliding off and also giving the water an interesting circular form.
I chose wax and water for my materials for the Forgiveness project. I carved a block of wax with a metal spoon that was heated over a candle flame. I carved a random arrangement of holes of various sizes.
