You: 500 free
Me, an intellectual: too long to sprint, to short to pace, a glimpse into the gaping maw of death by stomach pain
Being good at the 500 and 200 free is so difficult because you swim the 500 and afterwards you think “WOW! I love the 200 so much more than the 500!” but then the next day you turn around and swim the 200 and feel exactly the opposite.

Good job on your 500 friend!
Thank you! I can tell you this, when I touched the wall and asked my dad (because we needed our own timers) how I did and was told I just answered “Are you serious” and looked over to my coach like they were lying.
Whoah! Great job on that 500! I swam it today and got a 6:29... Do you have any tips for pacing?
Thank you sooo much I was so shocked every time i came out of the pool to see my time! Especially because I came back from vacation last wednesday and missed hell week.
1. Try and work more on distance free sets since theyre obviously made to get you used to these type of events and improve in them. If you feel that your coach doesnt do enough distance sets just go up to them and be like “hey coach, I really feel like we don’t do enough distance sets do you think we can start doing more.” It may not seem like it but good coaches are always open to new suggestions.
2. Now, normally when I give advice for people on pacing I tell them to go out strong on their first 100 and then build. But I’m not going to say that, I’m going to tell you what I did, I sprinted EVERYTHING. I tried to go out fast and strong. Yes, I did slow down only a little bit after my first 50 but overall I just kept going fast and for me it worked. If you know that’s not going to work for you then the advice I give to other people would be: make sure you’re going out fast on your first 100 but don’t kill yourself otherwise you’ll lose pace. After that you might want to slow down but not too much otherwise you’ll lose pace too. These next three 100s are the most important because this is when everyone gets tired. For these you HAVE to build them as best you can. And finally use whatever energy you have left for the last 100.
