Angel’s Envy || Lis & Luce
The devil might be real. After a month of trying to adjust to her new job in a town fueled by old lore and superstition, Felicity was finally contemplating believing in something she’d never considered before. Her day had started off as it always had; She woke up in her crusty motel room, put on one of her 30 earth toned turtlenecks, and dashed out the door. She’d made a habit of getting up early to speed walk to Jay’s Bagels before work. She ordered her usual, as well as an extra large black coffee to go. She’d arrived to the office on time. Everything was just as it always was, until she noticed the note on her desk.
“Felicity- I cleared your appointments for the day. I need you to meet me at the White Crest General Hospital, as soon as you can. We have a pending 5150.
Felicity dreaded these cases. She’d had her fair share of inpatient work in the last two years of her residency, but White Crest had offered her a position where she’d mostly be dealing with outpatient and people who wanted her help. 5150s were heartbreaking. They were a known part of the job, but she still didn’t like seeing people in that state. She made her way to the hospital regardless. For a crisp fall day, the inside of the hospital room was colder than the outside air. The patient was bound to her bed with restraints, common practice when they were assumed a critical danger to themselves or others. “Cops were called this morning. They found her trying to kick down someone’s front door over on Harris Island.” The Doctor said. “She had a knife. She won’t speak and she won’t make eye contact with anyone. I was hoping talking with a woman might help. I can’t get this evaluation done.” Felicity agreed, and the doctors left her and the patient alone in the room.
The woman was in her late fifties, pale as a ghost, but still totally average and unassuming. A typical soccer mom. That was why Felicity was completely shocked when the woman had broken free of her restraints and charged. She’d jumped at her, and it had almost looked like she’d levitated for a moment. She was fast, and much stronger than she’d appeared. She wrapped her hands around Felicity’s neck, lifting her off the ground. Felicity opened her mouth to scream, but nothing came out. The woman grinned, and then spit in her mouth. It felt like a lifetime, but a moment later orderlies and Doctor Devito were rushing through the door. The woman cackled hysterically as she was ripped away from the terrified physician. “Go home, I’m paying you for the day. Get away from here-” The Doctor was frantically shooing her out of the room before she could even catch her breath. Felicity’s mouth was still agape, frozen in a horrible scream. The woman’s spit tasted bitter. She slowly pulled herself up, wandering out of the room. “It’s worse than I thought,” She heard her supervisor speaking to another doctor behind her. “We need to get an exorcist in here before she-” Felicity didn’t stay to hear the rest, she began running.
She didn’t stop running until she was across town and her turtle neck was soaked in sweat. She was back in the Bend, but on a street she didn’t recognize. It was a little past noon, but a bar was already open; smoking patrons clad in leather flowed in and out of the large front doors. Felicity wasn’t ready to go home just yet, and she didn’t want to be alone. She decided a group of alarming individuals would be safer than a day spent alone with visuals of what had just happened. She went inside, pushing past a few strangers who gave her confused side-eye glances. She could smell her own sweat mixed with the cigarettes and stale beer in the air. Upon looking down, she noticed massive sweat stains on her top. “Fuck-” she groaned. A bathroom sign directed her into the back corner of the punk bar. She pushed through the swinging door, practically throwing herself into a tiny bathroom stall. She immediately peeled off her turtleneck feeling slightly more comfortable in the black camisole she wore underneath. Despite the weather outside, the bar was warm and a little humid. Still, she didn’t want to be caught dead in something that showed so much skin. She planned on drying her top under the bathrooms hand dryer, but before she could exist the stall, someone was pushing the unlocked door open.
“Um, someone’s in here- can you wait-”
