Universal Chances
In the beginning, there was nothing. And then in millionths of a second, the universe expanded from an infinitesimal volume. Do you know what came before the Big Bang?
Science has absolutely no clue!
The first Thing that happened had to happen.
And from then on, matter had to organize itself into stars
And those burning balls of sub-molecular fury had to die, and that death had to be so spectacular on a cosmic scale that it created what makes us--
what makes us and our planets and our surroundings
Carbon, oxygen, nitrogen
iron, sulfur
to name a few
and then the universe had to stabilize! had to calm down enough for planets and stable stars to form
and then lightning had to strike
a primordial pond, an asteroid, doesn't matter
Life started: those basic building blocks of carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus, trace amounts of iron, calcium, and potassium had to come together in a form capable of being, capable of evolving, capable of living
think about that! random elements, in a pool of water!
they got struck by lightning(literally!) and formed something capable of evolving and living
from there, real life, multicellular life had to come
giant "machines", made of an unknowable amount of molecules and atoms had to come together and become real life
capable of living and reproducing -- these giant GIANT things, compared to the earliest life
and then, they had to come together, they had to start working together to grow beyond what they had been before
and that had to be developed into some kind of crab, or fish!
lil tiny baby itty bitty thing :333
that was 600,000,000 years ago.
The earth was formed 4 billion years ago; 4000000000 years ago.
lmulticelluar life has only existed for 1/3 of the time earth has and earth has existed for 1/3 of the time the univers has
it's existed on earth for 1/9th of the time the universe has existed in any real way!
and around two million years ago
we evolved.
In Africa, humans evolved to be smarter than everyone else, to run animals to death.
and only 90000 years ago we moved out of our ancestral home into the rest of the world.
that's 0.0006% of the time that the universe has existed.
That enormous chance that we exist today, and here's the amazing part: we do. We shouldn't. it's SO unlikley(probably not, actually) for any of this to happen and humans exist! fucking monkies!
and then, you and me. Do you know how many people there are on earth?
~8,100,000,000
do you know how many have exited?
~100,000,000,000
and we exist now
1/100,000,000,000 (people to ever exist) * 1/8,100,000,000 (people alive now)
that's the chance that someone exists right now
-- now let's get to who you are.
your genes aren't everything, but they're a damn good conservative estimate.
we have 46 chromosomes. the chance for all of them to be what they are now in you and in me is so astronomically unlikely, again conservatively 1/(52!)
that's 1/80,658,175,170,943,878,571,660,636,856,403,766,975,289,505,440,883,277,824,000,000,000,000.
my friend, that number is 8 followed by 67 numbers. and you are one of those.
again, our genes aren't everything, but they can be used to estimate
either way, the chance for you to be who you are when you are with your genes is 1/100,000,000,000 (people to ever exist) * 1/8,100,000,000 (people alive now) * 1/80,658,175,170,943,878,571,660,636,856,403,766,975,289,505,440,883,277,824,000,000,000,000 (your genes)
that is such an insane fucking number.
there is no fucking reason other than this for a number to be this fucking high.
that's 1/65,333,121,888,464,541,643,045,115,853,687,051,249,984,499,407,115,455,037,440,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
the denominator of that fraction is more than a million times, a MILLION TIMES larger than the amount of atoms, the amount of matter, that we know exist.
let that sink in. that number is a million times larger than all of the matter that has ever existed
that is the chance for you to exist now.
that chance is you. you are that one.
you are that one in time
and by god, you deserve it. you are beautiful. you always deserve it.
we all deserve it. each and every one of us rolled the cosmic dice( a d65 sepenvigintillion) and we fucking won. We all won.
Y’all, the earth we are on now has space, a place, for all of us. things might suck now, and they might continue to suck for a while, but I believe that they'll get better. because we can't throw away that chance. that chance that is (AT LEAST) a million times smaller than the chance that if we both picked an atom in the universe at random, the chance that the one I was the same one as the one you picked.
