I see; that would make a lot of sense!
evne so i still have to disagree with the whole notion because... Sokka still didn’t invent it. He devised the original concept, sure, and I think that he will go down in the history books as having co-invented it (in spite of the fact that he didn’t do the leg work, but its important to give the original concept people their due, so its notable that most inventors don’t get credit in this fashion), but Sokka didn’t actually create it.
People make it sound like Sokka single-handedly went into a cave and came out having personally created the inventions in question. It’s surprisingly close to a Great Man of History assumption.
And sure, I’d LOVE to do AUs where Sokka did, in fact, do that. Or fill-in-canon’s-blanks where, after the war and in his adulthood, he went about getting ALL the education and became the world’s greatest inventor until Asami Sato’s time.
But like, he didn’t actually do that during the timeframe of canon? He didn’t do it. So it’s weird to me that people said he did!
(Fun facts, one concept that I’ve never really followed up on was some idea where the Gaang goes on interdimensioanl travels and wind up getting coordinated mech suits and Sokka not only becomes a gadgeteer by that point, but REALLY gets into the whole mechsuit thing. So I think it may also be that Sokka going full supergenius feels REALLY appropriate to his character, even if it’s not something that’s technically a canon detail.)
