Amber and Red

I came to BrewDog's red ale, 5 a.m. Saint with some very clear expectations. BrewDog is known for making extreme, dare I say American, craft beers. So I figured the red ale would be buried in hops, like all American style ales.

I was pleasantly surprised by the subdued 5 a.m. Saint. It tastes closer to an English bitter than hoppy red. It has a full barley flavor and a nice bitter pinch in the finish. It may be an older bottle, hops gone stale, but I like it.

Oh! best before the eighth of July? Or is that the seventh of August?

Makes sense.

My Rating: A-

Taste Profile: Silky mouthfeel -> grapefruit/hops/malts/caramel -> bitter hoppy finish.

How much: $4, March 2012

Do I love this enough to drink it again: no

Would I recommend this to beer aficionados: yes

Tasting notes: pours cloudy brownish orange with a smallish head, not much retention, good lacing, some slow streams. Aromatic malts, caramel, and hints of tangerine hops on the nose. Buttery smooth creamy entry, silky mouthfeel, tastes of bitter orange peel, sharp fresh lively hops, malts, grapefruit, caramel, finishing boldly hoppy bitter. Medium complexity, medium-high depth, great transitions, great carry, great drinkability.
