“Oh shut up Ben,” Peter grumbled, smacking at the ghost’s shoulder. It was ineffectual of course, stupid ghostliness. “I swear if you were alive you’d be scraming too. It had so many MOUTHS Benny.”

Peter was still covered in saliva, he could feel it drying tacky against his skin. Gross, he’d have to wash the suit. “I thought it was going to eat me!” 

He leaned sideways, instinctually trying to bump his shoulder against Ben’s. But of course he almost toppled over. 

“I’m going to have nightmares about this thing Ben.”

The Face-Time call comes in at 4 am; for some reason, neither this nor the fact that the number is overseas and unlisted, alerts Klaus to the dodginess of the situation.  How he has managed to survive to his mid-thirties is entirely attributable to his unwieldy (and unearthly) powers, because Klaus’s capacity to trust pernicious individuals is both endearing and idiotic. 

It’s not that he’s stupid, damn it! It’s just that Klaus is desperately passive and flexible, and despises conflict. 

He slips out of the master bedroom; his thumb swipes across the call in one deft “accept” gesture, and there before him is the scowling face of his closest brother, but inverted, like an old analogue photo-negative. 

So grumpy! Jesus Christ. Klaus snorts involuntarily, and covers his mouth.

    “Um, hey, there, Anti-Ben.  I’m gonna hazard a crazy guess an’ say yer noooot in the States right now....?” 

He gestures slowly, in encouragement, at the mug glaring back. 

    ‘Which....meaaaans yer callin’ me why? Not that it’s unwelcome! Just. Ya know. Things went down and it might be a little awkward explainin’ this to my sibs.”

     Emerald eyes are set alight as he seizes the moment, flinging himself with utter commitment across the living room floor as an outstretched hand desperately grapples for the invisible blown kiss, like a child straining for a pot fly baseball in the summer heat. His whole body stretches and strains as inked hands reach for the imaginary kiss, then with a triumphant HAH! he grabs hold of the air, lets the rest of his body topple and roll across the antique carpeting as he protects the kiss by clutching it tight to his chest. 

     When next he appears from behind the coffee table, he’s got a shit eating grin and a head full of tousled brown curls. He brings his closed hand closer, gives it a big smacking kiss, and tosses it back to his brother. 

     “Love you too, Benny Boy.”

“Ben?” Klaus hissed, trying to avoid the eye of the bloody soldier as he looked around the barracks. “C’mon, man, I’d really like to see your face right now-”

"Five?" Ben finds him in the courtyard. "Here, I wanted to give you this before everyone else woke up." He hands him a decidedly book-shaped gift all wrapped up in green newspaper; a little Christmasy, but neat. Grace had helped him with it, of course, and each edge was folded to perfect neatness. Inside, he'll find a fully illustrated novel of several theories on time travel. "It might be best if you didn't let Dad see it, okay? Happy birthday."

The Boy has been awake since before dawn. Early mornings are really the only time he's found he can have to himself. The rest of the day is tightly regimented, between training drills and lessons.

He's glad to see Ben, and greets him with a rare smile, making space for him on the bench beside him.

Tearing into the paper eagerly, Five's eyes grow wide.

"Ben, this is--! This is great. Thank you!" He loops an arm around his brother and hugs him to his side. "Hold on, I left yours upstairs."

He vanishes and returns a few moments later in a flash of blue temporal energy and places a box in Ben's lap. Inside is a large tome bound in rich, buttery leather. Gold embossing on the side reads The Complete Works of Edgar Allen Poe.

"I thought that would keep you in books for a little while, at least. Maybe until we can convince dad to let us go back to the library again, right?"

He clenched his fists, almost as if he was going to Blink away, but the effects he saw, and he had debates with himself if Ben saw it too didn’t take away. This wasn’t that kind of clenched fist. “That doesn’t mean we just give up,” he said not necessarily through clenched teeth, but his tone was clipped in a way only Five could clip it. He’d sound like Luther if it weren’t for his tone.

Peter believed in many things. Of course he did, he was a New Yorker; he’d seen aliens, goblins, metal men, things made of ooze. He was open minded, he had to be. He did not, however, believe in ghosts. 

Which meant whatever was moving things around in his apartment COULD NOT be a ghost. Nevermind that it did all the traditional ghost things like flickering the lights and knocking things off counters. It was not a ghost.

It was probably just a thing that had followed him home one night, he was Spiderman, weird things followed him all the time. 

He was looking over the fact that whatever this was it had been in the apartment since he’d moved in. 

Peter sighed, looking at his leftovers which had been helpfully moved half into a Tupperware and half onto the floor. He’d still have enough for tomorrow. Probably.

“Thank you?” he tried, speaking to the thing that was probably real and definitely not a ghost. “I mean, you tried? Whatever you are.”

“Look, are you here to hurt me because, I really don’t want to deal with that right now? I just got off patrol.” No response, of course there wasn’t. It hadn’t spoke in the time Peter moved in.

“Bang on the wall or whatever, once for yes, twice for no?”
