Resolution about characters
Christopher: My feelings about Christopher are just as confused as he is with his own feelings. I don’t really understand how I feel about. He is a great character that struggles with even the simplest thing, yet no matter what he always makes an effort to overcome them and don’t let the others disparage him. For example, when he was told that he wouldn’t be able to take the math exam, he didn’t stop trying, instead he kept of practicing every day. He is also a great person who represent people with Asperger’s syndrome, and shows their struggles in life such as understanding emotions that tries to overcome by various ways such as reading their expressions. Yet, at the same time, I can’t help but fell annoyed by him at sometimes. His dream about wishing to be alone and describing a dream where everyone dies as a relaxing and nice one makes me angry at him. I think it is a selfish thing because even though he hates attention and be overwhelmed by it, nothing gives him the right to wish that people who help to be dead. Even so I don’t blame him because I believe that it is hard to feel like you are left out. In addition, I can’t help but sympathize him. He is a person who tries and gives his best, yet his efforts are not acknowledged by others, and he is even bullied by some. He is a person with a special case who was left by his mom and lived a lie with his father. As a conclusion, my feelings about Christopher keeps on shifting through the story between admiration, irritation, and sympathy, so I won’t say that I really like him, but I definitely don’t hate him.
Christopher’s father (Ed): At the beginning of the story, I was really admired Christopher’s father character because even though he was alone, heartbroken, and left alone with a son who had Asperger’s syndrome and needed extra care, he was able to provide all his needs and kept strong for him. He also tried to show him how much he loved him and considering his condition at the same. I didn’t sympathize him because even though he was put through a lot, he was able to overcome it and take care on his son without anyone’s help. I viewed him as the perfect father, but that didn’t last for long. As the story line kept going and more facts was revealed, my opinion about him took another path. It started with him trying to stymie Christopher from writing his book which I justified by wanting to protect him and keep him away from trouble. However, when the first fight took place between them, I was really angry because I thought that it was too much and that he had no right to do it especially with the fact that Christopher has a special case that prevents him from understanding all the situations he is put through. When he apologized and took him to the zoo, I thought that it was just a moment of anger that he couldn’t control, and I was okay with it because everyone has one of those moment once in a while. The thing left me shocked and speechless was when the fact that he actually to Christopher and made him believe that she was dead. I do understand that he was afraid from losing him, and wanted to protect because he didn’t know what his reaction will be, but I don’t think he has a right to do so, and thus I do blame him for his actions. I believe that if he told Christopher about the fact that his mother ran away and explained to him the whole situation, things would have had a better ending. In other words, my opinion about Christopher’s father indeed changed, however I still see him as a good father despite all he did because I think that when you are put in a situation like the one he was put through, you won’t be able to use your mind and will act without thinking due to the fact that you are scared to lose your son.
Christopher mother (Judy): Christopher gave us a good picture about his mom at the beginning of the story from what he remembered about her. He described her as a clean person who smelled good and he added that fact that he like that. I didn’t really have any feelings toward her, maybe because I never really thought that it would cause a change. Things. However, took a turn when Christopher was told by Mrs. Alexander that his mom cheated with Mr. Shears. I really hated her at that moment because I couldn’t understand why she would do that, and I also believe that there is nothing that would really justify her actions. Things became worse after I discovered that she is alive and that she ran away with Mr. Shears. I was really angry because that means that she choose him over here own son, and that was just unforgivable. The hate toward her kept on growing as the story when on until her letters were revealed. As Christopher read the letters that his mom sent him, I could sense the care and guiltiness in her words, but that didn’t change my hate to toward her, maybe reduced it a little, but it was still there. Also, I believe that even if she wanted to see her son, nothing stopped her, she was just scared and didn’t want to face the consequences to her actions. I do blame her on everything she did because she did it own her own will and not by force. Also, I do think that she deserves to be sympathize because she is the one who chose what to do and got the life that she wanted and the one that she deserves for her actions. Welcoming Christopher when he came to London wasn’t something that made her look as a better person in my eyes because, honestly speaking, I think that the least she could do after what she did. To summarize, I can’t help but hate Christopher’s mother despite everything because even though she might have had a hard time raising Christopher, it wasn’t an excuse for what she did because his father was in the same situation and he was the father and the mother to Christopher after she left, so basically, she is just a weak person who runs away and hide instead of trying to overcome her struggles.
