I often think about friends from my past. Like my best friends from kindergarten who I haven’t seen in over a decade. I wonder where they are now.
Especially my almost kindergarten husband. He moved away after first grade but our moms were friends and his new town was close so we saw each other a bunch. We used to always play in this one McDonald’s play place. We would pretend it was on fire and he’d always push me down the slide to save him over himself.
Now that play place is gone. And it’s been years since I’ve seen him. I’ve tried looking him up on Instagram but when I don’t remember his last name, and I wouldn’t know what he looks like now, it’s pretty difficult.
Some days I miss my preschool best friend too. I got in a car accident with her once, we were pretty oblivious to it tho, we were playing with gum, and it was just a little fender bender. She’s one of my neighbors. Not next door but pretty close. I had no idea if she still lived in that house, cuz it’s been so many years. But she does, I saw here one day in the summer, she still looks like the same grin-faced girl I became friends with over a decade ago. I don’t think she recognized me.
And even friendships lost in more recent years. My best friend of 13 years and I drifted apart and had a somewhat messy falling out. I wonder when it all changed. We were so solid and tight for years, I’m not sure what and when it changed, but it did, and I had to learn how to navigate things without her love and support.
As someone who’s lost a lot of friends over the years, so it’s something I’m used to. But I find comfort in those old memories even if the people aren’t around anymore. Part of me wants to leave well enough alone, but most of me wonders how they are, how they’re doing, what their life has been like since I saw them last, and if they ever reminisce about our time spent together, as I do.
