Amour 101
So, I work in a leather shop and we sell armour. I get a lot of customers who do not know the names of different pieces of armour and, after 8 weekends, it’s starting to mildly irritate me. I understand that most people do not even know the first thing about armour, so here’s a helpful guide.
Pauldrons - These pieces are applied to your shoulders. They could traditionally be worn on the defensive (less dominate) side, or on both shoulders. Our products strap across the chest.
Bracers - These wrap around your forearm. For archery, you would wear one on the arm that is holding the bow. Otherwise, wear two. THESE ARE NOT GAUNTLETS.
Gauntlets - Usually made of leather and metal. The leather is a glove, the metal is applied over the glove and covers the hand, fingers, and wrist.
Gorget - When I sqired for a full contact joust troupe, the gorget was the piece made of metal that hooked into the breast plate and sat just under the knight’s neck and covered his throat down to his upper collarbone. His helm could cover the top of the gorget. In the leather shop, we have really cheap looking ones that attach to the pauldrons and cover only the entire collarbone.
Greaves - These go around your calves. Kinda like bracers, but for your legs.
Curriss - Basically a leather breast plate the covers the front and back of the torso.
