Why I don’t size socks until after they’ve rested, been cold net bag washed and hung to dry: socks haven’t softened nor have they shrunk (even a little) into their final size. It’s easier to see in person than to show in an image but the left/top sock is the unwashed sock. On the same sized blocker the unwashed sock has a loose fit with looser stitches, has yarn that’s a bit rough (when compared to the washed version which bloomed in the wash), baggy on the heel and longer on the leg. What do you think is the difference between these three pairs of socks? No. 179, No.184 and No. 185? One pair sized at a 8 womens’s(7 men’s), one pair at 10 women’s(9 men’s) and the yellow pair at 12 women’s/11 men’s. All were made at the 3.5 Tension Dial setting, all have a 20 row cuff, 60 row leg and foot and the 10 row preheel. The only difference was the fiber - the yarn used. (See their Ravelry projects for yarn info etc). Further to the difference in a project when only one variable is different. (Another clarity on why stating a certain sized sock universally would be a specific row count). For my Ravelry account please see my profile for the link. The difference……. is simply a half turn of the Tension Dial (but wait check out these findings)! Imagine 5 pairs of cuff down ribbed socks. All created identically with the only difference being the dial half turn. The exciting results: -each identical pair of socks were ONE foot size bigger with only the half turn of the dial being the change. -each pair are 0.5cm longer from top of cuff to sock seam with each half dial change. -yarn self striping was distorted on the foot for dial turns 3.5 or less but self corrected for dial turn settings of 4 and up. -sock diameter is assumed bigger but not verified or measured (good for larger foot sizes). This experiment shows that I was able to create socks easily from a US Women’s 6-10/Men’s 5-9 using the exact same row numbers and basic method and still used less than 100 grams of sock yarn for each pair.
