Funeral for Julie Flynn, wife of Oxnard Mayor Flynn
By George Miller
Oxnard’s equivalent of a state funeral was held for Julie Flynn, dearly departed wife of Mayor Flynn, on Saturday. About 500 attended at the Santa Clara Church on E Street. It was a beautiful, majestic, thoughtful, spiritual and emotional event. The Catholic Church really knows how to do this right, with pomp, dignity, inspiration, consolation and relevance. Monsignor Jon Majarucon presided over the ceremony. One of the clergy told the assembly that he has known the Mayor since High School and knows the family. It was clear that family and friends had a hand in this, too, in the arrangements, choice of hymns, songs and the emotional and sometimes even humorous eulogies from the closest friends and family.

Attendance at Ms. Flynn’s send-off looked like a Who’s Who of Oxnard, along with a large portion of the church’s parish. It seemed like Mayor Tim Flynn greeted almost every one of them.

The overall mood was a celebration and honoring of her life, but the grief of departure was so evident, too. It was a 2+ hour event, with liturgy, speakers, communion, etc. The heady aroma of incense, clear harmony of the organ, voices raised in song, light through the stained glass windows, elegant soaring church architecture and crucifix up high dominating it all, helped set the stage for this very human drama of life, salvation and afterlife. We heard: Ave Maria, Time to Say Good-Bye, On Eagles Wings, I am the Bread of Life, The Supper of the Lord and more.
We felt strangely at peace afterward.

There was a wake and meal afterward at the Oxnard Farm Park.
Lots of us are praying for Julie, Tim and family. It was an untimely departure for a much beloved member of the community. Lets all give them our support.

I don’t know what’s going on in life, just that I’ve never been straight. Okay good, so at least one consistent thing.
The outside of my life looks so pretty. New leadership role in working with wild animals. Graduating in May. Applying for vet tech jobs now. Boyfriend? My hair looks bomb.
The inside is currently turmoil. Cranked to 11/10 so it’s louder turmoil. I’m all “orange juice instead of food” dead energy levels. I can only write about some of it in my internship journal which is good and bad. I keep wasting time being stuck.
