the way that 8.10 Bride was set up as and should have been the perfect closure episode for clana:
“Maybe Clark Kent and Lana Lang just aren’t meant to be”
Lana says leaving him is the hardest decision she’s ever had to make but glad she had the strength to do it
Clark gets to see her again and say goodbye in person and ask her his lingering questions, which he needs for closure so he isn’t stuck feeling abandoned and confused by the video
“Clark there’s nothing more you can do for me, you don’t need to stay.” (yes Lana says this in the context of the hospital but we’re looking at the bigger implications here)
Lois finally admits to herself that she has feelings for Clark
Clark and Lois are so close to kissing, showing that he is ready to move on
But nooooo they had to drag it out longer, make both of their characters regress, and add in the plot of her filming her goodbye video under duress. Like why could they have not just let the clana chapter close nicely and neatly here??
Lana’s character deserved to make this choice on her own, have the autonomy to say goodbye, and to move on. It was such a disservice to both of them to end their relationship tragically, by force, just a few episodes later.
